Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Depending on where you’re at on Mt. Hood this morning, it’s either sunny (Meadows) or cloudy with flurries (Timberline). That’s probably how things will play out today – the marine layer is stacked up against the Cascades, and locations farther west will be in it. The next couple of days, Sunday and Monday, bring flurries. After that, we move back into a period of warm, dry weather.

For Saturday, we’ll have sunshine or clouds and flurries as mentioned above. As the atmosphere destabilizes this afternoon, we may also see increasing clouds and snow at all mountain locations. The snow level will be 3000′ early, 5000′ this afternoon, and 3000′ overnight. Models disagree on snowfall amounts tonight. Anything from 1-4” is possible, with more snow falling at T-Line than Meadows. Wind today will be W 15 all day and WNW 20 after midnight.

Sunday looks partly cloudy with flurries in the morning and cloudy with light snowfall in the afternoon and evening. The snow level will be 3000′ early, 4500′ in the afternoon, and 2500′ overnight. About .1” water value (WV) falls during the day, for 1” of new. Another .3” WV falls overnight, for 2-3” of snow. Wind will be WNW 20 in the morning, WSW 15 in the afternoon, and light and variable after midnight.

Monday starts off with light snowfall and ends up mostly cloudy. The snow level will be 2500′ early, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 5000′ after midnight. Just a trace of new snow falls. Wind will be Light and variable all day and NW 15 after midnight. The next few days after that look warm and dry.

Random Morning Thoughts

I went windsurfing yesterday, and it wasn’t exactly call it ‘easing into wind season’. I was panting and my forearms were feeling weak three minutes into my session. I thought about going in, but decided to stick it out for a bit and see if my body calmed down. Thankfully it did, and I was able to enjoy a purely awesome 3.2 session on the river. Now I’m … SORE!

New things or unfamiliar things or it’s-been-a-while things can be really hard at first. I don’t just mean physically. Anxiety and fear can rise up in response to the unknown. This is natural and normal, and understanding this cycle can help us tolerate the initial burst of anxiety (or excitement) that comes with something new.

You’ll have your own coping skills to deal with tension. I just remind myself to wait it out, and then I focus on something outside of me. I might take some deep breaths too. Eventually, my stress level decreases. The important thing about this is that we are teaching the nervous system that it can tolerate ‘that thing’. If we back off when we get nervous, if we stop before we develop some sense of mastery or competence, we are more likely to back away or give up in the future. May you be courageous. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Well, well. Yesterday was certainly a windy one! For those of you who found that overwhelming, you’ll find the next few days more hospitable. Low pressure overhead will knock the gradients down and keep the wind max average in the 20’s.

For Saturday, we’ll have west wind at 10-15 from Stevenson to Hood River and 20-23 from Mosier to Arlington. Looks like that’s going to be the wind forecast for the entire day; partly cloudy sky and marine air in the west will keep wind speeds down close to home today. A weak front approaches the coast on Sunday and high pressure builds in behind. That will take the wind up a bit.

We’ll start Sunday with 10-13 everywhere. The wind will slowly build during the day to 24-27 from Viento to Arlington, lasting until sunset. Monday looks like 10-13 in the morning and 22-25 from Hood River to Rufus in the afternoon with 10-13 at other locations.
