Saturday. Complicated forecast = late forecast. Lots of snow coming, tho…

It’s a complicated forecast scenario for the Gorge this morning, once again, and when that happens, it takes me a lot longer to finish the writeup. The Mt. Hood forecast, which containing some uncertainty, is more clear – we’re going to get more snow! Expect overcast sky and flurries this morning, becoming partly cloudy (with perhaps low/mid clouds and fog) by mid-morning. Clouds move in again this afternoon, and flurries start up this evening. The snow level today will be 500′ early and less than 1000′ this evening. We’ll see .1” water value (WV) this morning, for an inch or so of snow. We’ll see .1-.2” WV tonight, for 1-2” after 7pm. Wind today will be W 10-15 early, rising to SW 25 in the afternoon and SW 40 tonight. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow sees snow in the morning, a chance of partly cloudy sky in the afternoon, and another round of light snow overnight. The snow level will be 1000′ or less all day long. We’ll receive .5” WV between 4am and 4pm, for 5-6” of light and fluffy powder. Then we’ll get another .3” WV after 4pm for another 3-4” of new. Wind tomorrow will be SW 40 early, NW 30 mid-morning and a wicked W 40 in the afternoon and evening.

Monday contains some uncertainty. The snow level starts off at 1000-1500′, and rises around 4pm to 5500′ (sounding model) or 6500′ (850mb temp prediction) before dropping to 4500′ by 7pm and 3500′ around midnight. The snow level uncertainty leads to precip-type uncertainty, of course. It looks like we’ll see .6” WV in the morning before the warming happens, for 5-7” of snow. Then we’ll see .5” WV in the warm period, for rain/snow/sleet/something. After the snow level drops, if the models are correct, the heavens open up with 2” WV by Tuesday morning. That’s 18” of fresh. I dunno – some models suggest the heavy precip will be south of us. Some models suggest we’ll be too warm. Let’s kinda get excited and also wait and see. Wind on Monday will be SW 35-40 through the morning, picking up to a lift-stopping W 55 around 4pm and staying that way all night.

As of right now, the GFS model (my best friend) is predicting 1.5” WV on Tuesday will the snow level at 4000′ early and 500′ in the afternoon. That’s a LOT of fresh pow. It’s also predicting lift-stopping winds of W 50-60. So… another wait-and-see day. The GFS also says we’ll see dumping snow on Wednesday.

Gorge Wind Forecast

We have light east wind this morning, and it shall stay that way all day today. Tomorrow starts with E 15-18 and switches to W 13-16 in the afternoon as a front swings through. Monday looks light and variable. As of right now, it looks like we’ll see W 30-40+ on Tuesday afternoon. Depending on the actual storm path, this could be one of those nasty I-84 windstorm situations. Honestly, I have no idea how to predict the wind events that impact the drive – the last one surprised me. So, I’m going to be cautious here, and mention the possibility of a nasty afternoon commute.

Random Morning Thoughts

Since we’re still stuck in a winter storm of some sort (there’s freezing rain falling in Parkdale), I’m going to take a moment to give props to Larry over at Hood River Weather. HRW is the go-to local resource for current weather and road conditions throughout the Gorge. Even the folks at the National Weather Service use Larry’s website for current Gorge weather conditions.

In a brilliant move, Larry added a chatroom to his weather website. Duh. Who doesn’t love to talk about the weather? His chatroom has led to weekly weather geek (of which I am one, of course) meetups at Hood River’s Volcanic Bottle Shop. Not only is Larry keeping people safe, he’s creating a community. Community, of course, is awesome.

So, if you have a moment today, click through and visit Hood River Weather. If you think Larry’s website is awesome, you can scroll to the very, very bottom and make a donation. Your donations will be extra appreciated, because Larry retired yesterday. Larry’s awesome, his website is awesome, and you’re awesome too. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

I love almost every part of forecasting. The one part I’m not so excited about is the part where I walk outside in the winter to see if Nothing is happening. It’s COLD out there, and my toes are chilly! The answer to that question today is “yes”, Nothing is happening. The low cloud is there. Expect an overcast day with temps in the mid 30’s early and the upper 30’s this afternoon. It’s likely we’ll see some snow or freezing rain tonight, all the way down to river level. It won’t be a lot – .1-.2” water value – but you can expect slick roads tomorrow morning. Light east wind, no rainbows.

Speaking of rainbows – did you see the one yesterday morning? A rainbow over the snowy Gorge = most awesome.

Sunday starts out cloudy and precipitaty. Temps will be just below freezing in the morning and in the upper 30’s (maybe) in the afternoon. It’s hard to say if we’ll see snow or freezing rain tomorrow morning. People over 1000′ will see 3-5” of snow, most likely. Light east wind early, light west wind late. 75% chance of rainbows in the afternoon.

Monday starts off cloudy with precip. Temps will be in the low 30’s early (NWS says 36, but the sounding model says 30) and the upper 30’s in the afternoon (NWS says 47 – I’m not buying that at all!). If the sounding model is correct, we’ll see snow/freezing rain in the wee hours down to river level, with .2-.3” water value possible. People over 1000′ get another 2-4”,with snow continuing through early afternoon. If the cold air takes longer to wash out, as it often does, cold pockets like Parkdale will see a LOT of snow Monday. As of right now, models suggest very heavy precip Monday afternoon and evening. Light wind sticks around for much of the day, going to W 13-16 early evening.

I-84 long-range commute forecast: Monday AM – snowy/slushy. Monday pm – very rainy. Tuesday AM – very rainy, possibly strong west wind. Tuesday PM – Very strong west wind. Wednesday AM – possibly snowy, possibly heavy rain. Wednesday PM – hopefully not icy yet. Thursday AM – icy. Thursday PM – icy.
