Gorge Wind Forecast

First off today, a notice from the US Coast Guard: the Columbia River is closed to all vessels (including you) between approximately Home Valley and the Narrows (River mile 154 to 158), unless you have the explicit permission of the Captain of the Port. You also must remain 500 yards from fire air support from Cascade Locks westward. In other words, it’s probably best if you don’t windsurf, kite, SUP, paddle any downwind floating object, or take out your sailboat anywhere along the Eagle Creek Fire.

As for the actual wind today, we’re starting with .07 and .05, a good sign if you’re looking for west wind. At dawn, the wind was in the 17-20 range between Cascade Locks and Hood River with 5-10 or so further east. A trough of low pressure is above the Gorge (hence the deep marine clouds) and a weak frontal system is approaching the coast. These features will combine to make the wind inconsistent today. That said… We’ll see 17-20 all day between Cascade Locks and Viento. The Mosier ot Rowena stretch will pick up to gusty 23-27 by early afternoon, holding through sunset. The eastern Gorge will climb to 20-23 this afternoon. Swell to Hood River is the tricky spot today; clouds should burn back midday, giving us inconsistent 23-27 for a period of time. However, models indicate that clouds will move back in during the afternoon, knocking the wind back down to 17-20.

That frontal system moves inland tonight, setting up a cloudy start to the morning. High pressure is set to build inland during the day on Sunday. Models are disagreeing about the wind direction in the afternoon, with the 4/3k saying west and the 12k saying east. Given the morning clouds and strong offshore high, I suspect that we’ll see W 10-13 in the morning with a fade to W 5-9 in the afternoon.

Monday starts off with east wind at 25ish near Rooster Rock and 20ish near Cascade Locks. The wind will fade to E 10-15 in the afternoon. Tuesday looks like E 5-10 early, calm wind midday, and gusty 21-24 out of the west in the afternoon. Wednesday currently has a forecast of W 24-27.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’ve been sitting here searching my mind for something to say this morning, and I don’t have much. I’m going to go eat breakfast instead. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

ATTENTION: Post Canyon and all other Hood River County lands (Pine Mont, Kingsley, etc.) and all county roads that access county forest (Riorden Hill, Kingsley, Post Canyon) are now CLOSED due to extreme fire danger and a lack of resources to fight any fires that might start. No biking. No hiking. No equestrianing. No nothinging. Please obey the closures – there will be sheriff patrols in place. Other closed lands include Kreps (Hospital Hill) and SDS (Whoopdee and Underwood). In addition, all forest lands east of Dee Highway and north of Mt. Hood’s peak are under a level one (get set!) evacuation order.

Upcoming Events

Huckleberry Fest is today and tomorrow, and you can support our firemen by eating Huckleberry pancakes at the White Salmon fire hall this morning. There’s a skateboarding contest, the Huck Fest, tomorrow morning at 11 at Daubenspeck Park.

We’er still on for the Hood River Fly-In today and tomorrow and the Aluminum Man triathlon in The Dalles this morning. If you want to escape the smoky air and relax, there’s a free half-day meditation retreat today at Yoga Samadhi from 1 to 5. Another option to escape the smoky air is to head to Portland, where the AQI readings are in the teens. One more reminder that Hood River County lands, including Post Canyon, are closed til further notice, as are Kreps and SDS lands.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
