Gorge Wind Forecast

The Northwest is under a broad area of low pressure today with high pressure off the California coast and low pressure in the Gulf of Alaska. The offshore high will nudge a little closer today as heat in the desert drops the pressure to the east. The atmopshere will be unstable, meaning the wind will be gusty. Westerlies respond by picking up this afternoon. We’ll start with 10-13 from Viento to Swell with 5-10 elsewhere. By noon, the wind will pick up to gusty 17-20 from Stevenson to Hood River. Late afternoon wind will be 19-23 from Stevenson to The Dalles. River temp is 55 degrees. Flow is ginormous: 523kcfs.

A solid marine push on Sunday combines with building offshore high pressure and a desert heat low for stronger, steadier westerlies. Clouds will likely fill in to Hood River in the morning resulting in dawn patrol of 20-23 from Mosier to The Dalles. Late morning westerlies will pick up to 26-29 from Viento to The Dalles. Stevenson will probably join in at some point, and Rufus may too, although there’s way too much current there for it to matter – you won’t be getting on the water between Maryhill and Rufus for quite a while! Arlington will probably remain in the 10-13 range.

Monday sees a ridge of high pressure building inland. A low-level inversion and marine push west of Hood River starts the day with 23-26 from Hodo rvier to Mosier. Midday wind peaks at 25-29 and then backs off to 23-26. That’s the GFS forecast. The ECMWF isn’t quite as robust with the wind speeds. Models keep the westerlies in the teens to mid twenties for the following three days, but details do vary.

Road and Mountain Biking

The 44 Trails Association is reporting that Knebal, Eightmile and Bottle Prairie are open. Surveyor’s still has trees down. Lake Branch Road is mostly melted out. Vista Ridge is open. Enjoy your three summits! Tonight is the Baller’s Ball at Dirty Fingers to celebrate their anniversary and the Cascadia Dirt Cup.

The Cascadia Dirt Cup is in Post Canyon Saturday, so you’ll want to make other plans. If you volunteer as race support, you’ll be helping the HRATS earn some cash. Hood River County has a work party on the Pinemont Loop next Saturday.

Upcoming Events

Today’s all-day events include the Cascadia Dirt Cup mountain bike race in Post Canyon and a Dressage schooling show at the Hood River Saddle Club. If you like giving back to trails, you can volunteer for the race and earn money for the HRATS or help Hood River County by joining the Pinemont trail work party that starts at 9am.

Other events include a group road bike ride from Mountain View Cycles at 9am and free yoga at 10:30 at both locations of Pure Yoga. There’s a plant sale in White Salmon this morning starting at 8 and a plant share at Rockford Grange from 2-5pm. There’s a swap meet at Windance tomorrow morning. Tonight is the Baller’s Ball at Dirty Fingers in celebration of their 11th anniversary.

Good news today from the Forest Service: Mt. Defiance, Starvation Creek, and the lake trails around Wahtum Lake have reopened. Other trails west of Mt. Defiance remain closed due to hazards from the Eagle Creek Fire.
