Gorge Wind Forecast

The weather over the next few days will alternate between weak inland high pressure and weak weather systems pushing through. While this will keep the westerlies going, they’ll be inconsistent and gusty. Lack of consistency in day-to-day runs of the weather models also makes for less accurate forecasting, especially more than 12 hours out…

For Saturday, early gradients were .06 and .02, meaning the western Gorge is likely the place to be. With high pressure offshore and also over the PNW, westerlies remain in the “moderate” range today. An offshore front approaching in the evening could nudge the wind up a bit, but could also make it gusty. Westerlies start the day at 11-14 from Viento to Swell and fill in at 14-17 from Stevenson to The Dalles this afternoon. Light wind east of there. River flow is 61,800cfs and temp is 67 degrees.

A weak weather system drags in clouds and rain on Sunday along with afternoon instability. Models have been all over the place with the forecast. Latest forecast: 8-11 from Stevenson to Mosier in the morning, 13-16 from Stevenson to Rufus midday with rain in the western Gorge, and 21-24 from Stevenson to Rufus after 5pm, after the front moves through. For most of the day the eastern Gorge will see 10-13.

High pressure rebuilds on Monday for a steadier day of westerlies. Morning wind will be hampered by cold temps in the desert and a Nothing cloud in the west. Expect 7-10 in the western Gorge with 18-22 from Moiser to Roosevelt early. Once the clouds burn off and the temps start to warm, westerlies pick up to 12-15 from Stevenson to Hood River with 22-25 from Mosier to Roosevelt. I’m holding off on predicting any deeper into the future as there’s too much happening in the forecast for the extended forecast to be accurate.

Road and Mountain Biking

Logging is finished on the Whoopdee trail. The southern 1/3 of the trail is gone, but you are welcome to go up there and ride and check it out. Ronnoc trail is still open and good to go, as is the climb out. Work parties coming soon. In other news… Tack alert for all trails! 130,140, Borderline, and the jump trails in the 150 area are closed for timber harvesting. Upper 8 Track is now closed due to logging. Motorized use is now permitted in Post (thanks, rain!), east side and Middle Mountain.

All other trails are open. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.
