Gorge Wind Forecast

Saturday’s starting of with light west wind, and nothing will change about that today. Westerlies at 5-10 continue for the western Gorge all day. Areas east of The Dalles will see the wind go perfectly calm this afternoon. Stevenson to Hood River has a chance of 8-12 this afternoon, but don’t make solid plans around that; high pressure building on both sides of the Cascades won’t leave much gradient by late Saturday.

Sunday sees high pressure in the desert and a thermal trough building along the coast. Gorge flow turns easterly in response. We’ll have 25-30 at Rooster and Stevenson with 15-20 near Viento to start the day. The wind holds through early afternoon and then fades. Viento and Stevenson drop to 5-10 or so, and Rooster drops to 10-15.

Monday morning starts off with west wind at 5-10 from Viento to Swell. The wind builds as a warm front approaches. By midday, westerlies should be in the gusty 22-25 range from Stevenson to The Dalles. as the front approaches, the wind shifts eastward. Afternoon: 13-16 from Stevenson to Moiser, gusty 23-26 Rowena to Rufus, 20-23 near Arlington. There’s a decent chance of stronger reading accompanying up-and-down conditions along the Maryhill stretch of the river (known colloquially as ‘wrong direction’).

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified – swell forecast courtesy of National Weather Service). Saturday: LTW/10-15/25-20, NW swell 5′ at 10 seconds. Sunday: 15-20/15-20/25-30, W 4′ @ 11. Monday: SW 10-15/LTV/N25-30, W 5′ @ 10. Jones Saturday-Monday: nope. Sauvie’s Saturday-Monday: nope.

Road and Mountain Biking

There’s brown pow out there, so go get it. Logging is finished on the Whoopdee trail. The southern 1/3 of the trail is gone, but you are welcome to go up there and ride and check it out. Ronnoc trail is still open and good to go, as is the climb out. Work parties coming soon.

130,140, Borderline, and the jump trails in the 150 area are closed for timber harvesting. Upper 8 Track is now closed due to logging. Motorized use is now permitted in Post (thanks, rain!), east side and Middle Mountain. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.
