Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

We have another morning of solid gradients and early westerlies. Those convective clouds above are a bit concerning – more convection than expected yesterday knocked the afternoon wind down from what was expected. Fingers crossed for today. Yesterday’s forecast for today relied on marine clouds as far east as Hood River. They’ve declined to participate, so we’ll be shifting the wind back to the Corridor today. Looking longer range, we should have westerlies of some sort, enough for most of you to get on the river, through Tuesday.

Let’s look at Saturday. We start with pressures of 29.96/29.85/29.80 for gradients of 0.11 and 0.05. We also have those previously mentioned convective clouds. The sounding model indicates we’ll hold on to a low-level cap today which should keep the wind from disappearing unexpectedly. If that forecast is correct, the following forecast is correct. If that cap breaks, the wind will drop to the 15-19 range instead. To start the day, we’ve got 17-20 to Swell or perhaps the Hook with teens to The Dalles, mid 20’s at Maryhill, and teens out east. All that variety means you may want to wait a little bit! By late morning, models like the idea of 23-26 from Stevenson to Hood River with 12-15 east to Arlington. They hint that the Lyle-Doug’s stretch will join at 23-26 this afternoon. Rufus: 20-23. Arlington: 13-16. River flow readings are 133-162kcfs (they’ve been jumping to about 220kcfs in the afternoon), river temp is 70F, and high temp forecast for Hood River is 84F and muggy all day.

Sunday sees an upper level low well offshore with just the tiniest protrusion of a ridge along the coast. The weather looks hotter for the Gorge, but fortunately, it also looks hotter in the desert. Thermal gradients for the win! We start the day with 14-18 from Stevenson to Hood River with 8-11 to the east. We’ll have a slow and steady build to 18-22 midday with 21-24 in the late afternoon. Models suggest the Lyle-Doug’s stretch will join late in the day as well. High temp: 91F and moderately muggy.

The ensembles like the idea of Monday being the windiest of these three. As of this morning, they’re calling for 24-27 from Viento to Mosier with Rufus joining in late in the day. High temp: 84. Current forecast for Tuesday: 17-20. Wednesday: calm most of the day with 11-14 possible late. Have a great day today!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! The Wasco County Fair is this week. So is the Skamania County Fair. There’s a 5k race at the Skamania County Fair if you want to get your race on! The Post Canyon 50k Ultra-marathon is Saturday. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

As of Monday, 8/17, the following trails are closed due to fire danger: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and andy lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.

Other news: some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
