Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Monday morning, and it’s another very windy start to the workweek. Once again, the forecast contains an endless lineup of strong west wind. Hopefully you’re ready for it! The only change in sight this week is an increase in marine clouds. Winds may shift eastward in response.

For Monday, though, you can stay right here close to home in the Corridor. Morning gradients of .15 and .06 combine with a 1028mb offshore high for Dawn Patrol at 24-27 from Swell to Mosier. No need to wear yourself out early in the chilly morning air; westerlies pick up to 26-29 from Viento to Rufus. Stevenson will be 24-27 and Roosevelt should max out around 20-23. A cold front approaching offshore will likely decrease the wind steadiness in the afternoon. Approaching cold fronts can also cause the wind to drop and get gusty between Viento and Mosier, so be prepared for that possibility this afternoon. River flow is 189kcfs and temp is 62 degrees.

That front moves through on Monday night into Tuesday morning. Deeper marine clouds result, setting up yet another strong west wind day. Clouds likely penetrate all the way to Hood River on Tuesday, meaning your dawn patrol shifts a little east. 24-27 from Mosier to Doug’s right off the bat. 28-32 from Stevenson to Rufus from mid-morning on. 23-26 at Arlington.

A trough of low pressure plows southward from Alaska Tuesday night. Wednesday morning’s clouds will be much deeper and darker and will carry a wee chance of showers in the west. Dawn patrol: 25-28 from Mosier to Rufus. Late morning onward: 27-31 from Mosier to Arlington. The western Gorge is a trickier call on Wednesday. 20-23 at Stevenson, but Viento to Moiser? If they escape the clouds, gusty 25-28+. If not: gusty 20-23. Deeper clouds on Thursday shift the strongest, steadiest wind even farther east. Westerlies continue and continue in the extended forecast.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified). Monday: NW5/10-15/30-35+, W swell 5′ at 11 seconds. Tuesday: 10-15/15-20/30-35+, W 5′ @ 10. Wednesday: NW10-15/NW10-15/30-35+, W 6′ @ 9. Jones Monday: 19-22. Tuesday: 21-24. Wednesday: gusty 17-20. Sauvie’s Monday: 12-15. Tuesday: 10-13. Wednesday: 12-15.

Road and Mountain Biking

Plains of Abraham is reportedly open. Fifteenmile is open. I saw a Strava on Gunsight, so that’s open too, which means 450 should be accessible (no confirmation of that). Logging has begun on Whoopdee, so the main loop is closed. Ronnoc trail will remain open, and so will the climb out. Other open trails: Post, Nestor, Columbia Hills, Hospital Hill, Dog River, Sandy Ridge, Syncline, and Falls Creek from the top. Lower Lewis River is open. Despite advice to the contrary, Red Hill Road was open to bikes on Saturday, 6/1. Proof is on The Strava. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk.

If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead any more as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new designated parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill now!
