Gorge Wind Forecast
Yesterday was absolutely, bar none, the steadiest day I’ve seen on the river maybe ever. At one point I looked at the iWindsurf readings, and it was 26 in Viento, 26 at Swell, and 26 at Hood River. And it stayed that way for a very long time! I see no reason why it wouldn’t do something similar today, except maybe for a slightly lesser marine cloud deck in the city. This means perfect conditions for your Viento to Hood River downwinder today. So… for Sunday: early morning westerlies at 21-24 from Viento to Mosier pick up by late morning. 25-28 is the forecast from Stevenson to Doug’s by early afternoon. Models like the idea of Rufus getting in on the action today with 25-28 this afternoon. Roosevelt will likely stay in the 13-16 range. River flow is half what it was yesterday: 137kcfs today, meaning your up-current/downwind paddling will have less resistance. River temp is 62 degrees.
A distrubance in the force well off the coast of Oregon and Washington may or may not be enough to disrupt the wind field on Monday. Keep it in the back of your head that gustiness could return. Keep this in the forefront: early morning westerlies at 21-24 from Viento to Mosier. Wind from mid-morning on will be 26-29 from Mosier to Rufus with 20-23 at Roosevelt. With a cold front approaching in the evening, we could see the wind turn gusty and unreliable, especially from Viento to Mosier.
That cold front moves in overnight Monday. Result: deeper marine clouds Tuesday morning, later clearing in the metro area, and stronger wind for the Gorge. Dawn Patrol may shift to Mosier-Doug’s. 24-27 is the call for that. By late morning, the wind should rise to 28-32 from Stevenson all the way to Roosevelt. As of right now, models are predicting 27-31 Wednesday through Friday.
