Monday. Wind today, rainbows tomorrow!

DSC_0418
It’s here – the day you’ve been waiting for – the day we get to spend all day chasing wind all over the Gorge! Our setup today is a little funky. There’s very strong high pressure in the Pacific (1039mb) and there’s also a trough of low pressure dropping down from Alaska and a frontal system moving in. All this stuff moving around isn’t an ideal setup, but it’s one that is already giving us good gradients (.11/.06) with highly fluctuating wind ranging from the single digits to the low 20’s as I write this (8:25am). River temp is 64 degrees (warmer than the air) and flow at The Dalles is 166kcfs. Continued after the chart…

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

So… If the models are correct, we’ll see a quick build to 23-26 from Stevenson to Rufus by midday. Then we’ll see the wind jump to 28-32 from Stevenson to Threemile. That’s a very optimistic projection by the models, given the setup. I think we’ll see a short burst of 28-32 from Stevenson to Mosier before rain moves into the western Gorge (and eventually into Hood River late in the afternoon). After this, the focus of the wind will be east of Mosier, where gusty upper 20’s to low 30’s will continue.

The Rufus stretch should be good for some period of time, good for those who can sit around with a rigged sail waiting for it. More reliable options might be Avery and Roosevelt, which seem to be less demanding on wind direction. If the models are correct, the strongest wind will be from 1pm onward, as cooler air pushes into the western half of the region.

Tuesday will suffer from showers and an unstable atmosphere, making the wind really tricky to predict. We’ll have 7-11 in the western Gorge and 13-16 east of Mosier to start the day. Wind models think we’ll see gusty 22-25 in the afternoon, but I think a more likely scenario is this: You’ll find 15-18 late morning east of Mosier for a couple of hours before increasing clouds and showers and instability shut down the wind in the afternoon. Tricky, yeah?

Looking at Wednesday, we’ll still be right under a trough of low pressure. That gives us light and variable wind in the morning and W 10-13 or less late in the day. Thursday looks showery with the possibility of gusty 22-25 in the afternoon.

For those of you wondering about Rock Creek Beach, here’s your update. First, there’s lots of heavy equipment and excavation work in the area, so it’s closed until that’s done. Next, the outflow pipe from the sewage treatment plant was damaged in the oil spill, and discussions regarding how to repair/replace this are ongoing, and that could impact when Rock Creek reopens. In other words, there’s no timeframe yet.

Finally, I’ll just keep reminding you of this one: CGWA has a bunch of contests happening this summer – photo, Strava, and video. Get more information about those contests right here.

Random Morning Thoughts

There are very few people out there who really totally have their s**t together, and most of us wish we had a greater sense of solidity and certainty about our worth and our capabilities. If you have doubts about yourself, you’re not the only one, and that’s what makes you human! Take some solace in that!

Anyway, most of us take a global approach to this quest for self-worth. We want to feel a certain way all of the time, across all domains of our lives. Unfortunately, that’s just not how our mind-body works. We’ll feel sure of ourselves in some domains and uncertain in others. For example, I feel solid when I turn my attention to others and offer them a listening ear and support. When I find myself in need of the same, I’m less certain, because I too am an imperfect and preciously flawed human being.

Anyway, it’s my belief that we can increase our confidence and solidity by placing ourselves in situations where those things are there, and by paying careful attention to how it feels to have the certainty we desire. You may find yourself feeling heavier. Maybe you feel like there are less filters between you and your experience. Maybe you notice your feet on the ground. Solidity is different for everyone. The point is this – if you pay attention to your certainty in one domain, that neural network with become stronger, and you’ll be more likely to find it in other domains.

Have I told you you’re awesome, even though you aren’t perfect? You are beautiful, you are perfect, just the way you are.. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Oh what a pretty start to the day: high clouds, low clouds, snowy Mt. Adams. I bet the sunrise was nice, not that I was awake to see it… Anyway, expect increasing clouds today with showers starting up around 5pm and continuing overnight. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the mid 60’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. 34% chance of rainbows.

Tuesday looks showery all day with thundershowers and hail possible in the afternoon and sprinkles possible through midnight. Oh hell, hail. Our orchardists won’t like that one bit. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon. Light to moderate wind. 99.9943% chance of rainbows. Wednesday looks partly to mostly cloudy with just a few raindrops. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the upper 60’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 2% chance of rainbows, most likely over Defiance or Underwood Mountain early.

Road and Mountain Biking

I think I may have given some unclear messaging on the 450 trail. People were trying to shuttle this weekend (not necessarily because of me, but because they wanted to do an awesome shuttle), and there are 25-30 trees down between the Fifteenmile intersection and the 44 Road. However, Fifteenmile is open. That said, it’s going to snow at 4000′ tomorrow, so you’ll be very, very cold if you go ride up there then. In other news, we are expecting rain tomorrow, which should make all the trails delicious this week. Good thing I washed my kneepads… Just a reminder – the Twin Tunnels trail is not open to Mosier. It is open to the east end of the Tunnels, and that is it.

Upcoming Events

Today’s free events include Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1, pickup kickball in Bingen at 6, community yoga at Samadhi at 6, pickup basketball at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 6:30, Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30, and YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 6:45.

Looking at next weekend, it’s the 10th Annual Gorge Ride out of the Discovery Center, benefiting efforts to reconnect the entire Historic Highway. Now, y’all want to be able to ride your bike to Portland all the way from The Dalles without getting on the freeway, right? So do the Gorge Ride.

It’s opening day of sailing season in Cascade Locks on Saturday with free sailboat rides, it’s the Summer Solstass ultramarathon in Yacolt and the Washougal Race for the Future cross-county mountain bike race . There’s also a trail work party next Saturday in Post Canyon at Binn’s Hill Staging Area and the White Salmon Backyard Half Marathon, benefiting local youth runners.

Have an awesome day today!
