Gorge Wind Forecast

Today is starting off windy and clear and a bit on the chilly side. The rest of the week looks similar to today: windy, cool mornings, 80 degree afternoon… NICE! For today, we started off with gradients of .07 and .05 with flow at 146kcfs and a river temp of 71 degrees. The wind was concentrated near Hood River, with 17-21 or so between Viento and the Spit. Models are hinting at a bit of a midday lull today followed by a mid-afternoon return to moderate westerlies. If you look up, you’ll see the reason why that might happen – a weak weather impulse passing overhead.

So, let’s just go with 18-22 between Viento and Mosier this morning. The wind might drop a bit midday (or it might not, given the extent of the marine clouds). As the clouds burn off, areas near Cascade Locks will pick up to 18-22. As the day winds on, the wind will fill in as far east as Doug’s Beach, but probably not until after 2pm.

Tomrorow starts off with 13-16 between Viento and Hood River. The wind will slowly build during the day to 20-23 between Stevenson and The Dalles. Enough said. Wednesday looks windier as the offshore high strengthens and we take a break from interfering influences. We’ll have Dawn Patrol at 20-23 between Swell and Mosier on Wednesday morning. The wind will quickly build to 24-28, probably the upper end of that, between Viento and The Dalles. When the clouds burn off, Stevenson and Cascade Locks will also become windy. Rufus will probably join in around mid-afternoon.

Looking at Friday… the day starts with 18-22 and picks up to gusty 24-27 between Cascade Locks and Rufus. Thursday currently looks like 18-22 early and 23-26 in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’ve been thinking a lot over the last couple of days about the events in Charlottesville in terms of First Amendment rights. In an ideal world, people would speak from a place of wisdom and kindness, and speech would not need protection and regulation.

But all people are not wise and compassionate, and speech often turns hateful, bullying, bigoted, oppressive. When people chant things such as, “Jews will not replace us,” they incite hatred and violence towards others. When people say, “Immigrants are taking our jobs,” they are inspiring fear, hatred, jealousy and resentment towards people of color and people with accents. This is bullying. Grownup bullying, but bullying nonetheless.

I love that our schools have anti-bullying rules. I wish that there was a way to bring this into the adult world – bullies in little bodies are scary, and bullies in big bodies are even scarier.

We’d all like to think that we aren’t bullies. Unfortunately, there are times when our behavior contradicts our idealized self-image. If we want the world to be a better place, we need to start by looking at our own action and speech. Think of one time in the last year when your words were unkind, oppressive, perhaps even bigoted. It’s okay – none of us are perfect!

How could you have approached that situation more compassionately? Here’s the real point – if we are able to tolerate the pain and shame of seeing our flaws, not just in terms of our speech, we are able to grow into better human beings. Take a look. Have an awesome day.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!
