Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Yesterday’s forecast gave us a shot at westerlies today, but that’s mostly dropped out of the picture now. We’re back to east wind for Tuesday and Wednesday. Models give a decent shot at westerlies Thursday followed by the possibility for strong, but cold, westerlies Friday and Saturday.

Let’s start with Monday. We have a weak but organized low offshore, marine clouds on the west side, and sun to the east. Pressures at 8am were 30.12/30.10/30.12 for 0.02 onshore. Today’s forecast has the Gorge about 5 degrees warmer than both Portland and Arlington. If we’re really lucky, we could see afternoon westerlies at 12-15 mph between Stevenson and Swell. Don’t bet on it. River flow readings are 61-82kcfs, river temp is 65F, and high temp forecast is 78F.

Tuesday brings easterlies at 15mph or so between Cascade Locks and Viento through late morning or early afternoon. Rooster will be light and variable all day. High temp: 78F. A bit more east wind is forecast on Wednesday. Peak easterlies will be 20-25mph mid-morning before doing the slow fade to 10-15mph in the afternoon. High temp: 79F.

Strong offshore high pressure combines with cooler air on the west side and warmer air on the east side Thursday for a shot at 21-24 between Stevenson and Hood River. Models are far from agreeing on this. They’re more in agreement for stronger wind on Friday and Saturday, but it’s still too far out for certainty about just how nuking it could be. Worth noting: high temps will be 60-70 on Friday but will fall to the low-mid 50’s by Saturday. After Saturday, it’s game on for cold, wet weather for the extended period. Enjoy the warmth this week!

Cycling

It’s dusty out there… Hood River County has reopened all motorized trails to motorized use. Hospital Hill, Underwood, and Whoopdee have reopened. Rifle deer season is open in both Oregon and Washington, so consider wearing safety colors while you’re riding.

The road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
