Gorge Wind Forecast

Mother Nature obliged the forecast yesterday by first making wind and then shutting it down with rain and thunderstorms. The Gorge remains under the influence of an upper level low and eastward-moving dissipating frontal system today. High pressure pushes inland tomorrow for a steadier round of westerlies. On Wednesday, that high settles in and sets us up for lighter wind through Friday morning.

Starting with Monday, we see that pesky upper level low offshore, drizzle in the west, and a band of moisture to the east. Westerlies take one look at all this rain and settle back into bed for a bit. Light and variable wind is the forecast for the morning. Around midday, as the Nothing cloud burns off, westerlies pick up to 14-17 from Mosier to Avery with 10-13 from Stevenson to Hood River and light/variable wind east of Avery. The front moves eastward this afternoon, combines with heat in Idaho/Nevada, and takes the wind up to gusty 21-15 from Avery to Boardman. There’s a catch: that time period is also associated with thunderstorm potential east of the Cascades. No guarantees on the wind today. River flow is an astoundingly low-for-June 181kcfs, river temp is 60F, and high temp forecast is 72F for Hood River.

Our pesky offshore low pressure system moves north into BC on Tuesday. It’s replaced by high pressure building offshore. Not only does that high settle in over the coastal water, it pushes inland too. This sets up the Gorge for 8-11 to start the day from Stevenson to Biggs. Eastern Gorge: light and variable early in the morning. We could see a brief period of moderate westerlies in the Corridor in the morning, but high pressure pushes inland and reduces the gradients by early afternoon. Your best bet will be Avery to Arlington after noon. Out there, westerlies climb to 23-26. Western Gorge: 10-13 in the afternoon. High temp: 71F.

High pressure really takes over on Wednesday. Models call for a calm day all day. More likely: calm wind in the morning with W 10-14 from Stevenson to Mosier in the afternoon. Thursday’s likely a carbon copy of Wednesday. Models hint at marine air returning to the western half of the state late Friday in time to drive an executive session in the mid 20’s. Models also tend to break down these high pressure systems too quickly. Fingers crossed for Friday and Saturday, but we’ll need to get closer to make any solid calls. Have a great week!

Wednesday: N20-25+/N25-30/N30-35+, SW 2′ @14. Jones Monday-Wednesday: 7-10. Sauvie’s Monday: W7-10. Tuesday: W7-10. Wednesday: N15-18.

Light westerlies. 3% chance of rainbows. Tuesday starts cloudy and ends partly cloudy. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and low 70’s later. Light westerlies. No rainbows. Wednesday looks sunny. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and low 80’s later. Calm wind. No rainbows.

Cycling

Trail reports: Whoopdee: dry. Post: mixed. 44 Road: dry. Falls Creek: good. From the 44trails.org website… Open trails: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks (to 1.5 miles above the 4410 road), 450 to the junction with 15 mile, Underhill. Upper 450: patches of snow and 10 trees down.

Post Canyon: the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure. Surveyor’s Ridge: clear of snow and trees. Other 44 Road Trails: clearing in progress. Cows are out on Hospital Hill. No parking at the corral. No dogs on the trails. No exceptions. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they let us use their land, and in return, we respect their rules! New Whoopdee: open.  

Local Events

Mountain View Cycles women’s ride is every Thursday, bottom of Post at 5:30pm. Dirty Fingers has the Post n’ Pint on Thursday evenings at 5:30pm from the shop. They also have the women’s Post n’ Pinot Wednesday evening at 5:30pm from the shop. The Small Boat Group does paddles every Thursday evening at 6pm. Hatch laps are the latest thing they do. Coming up next weekend, we have 12 Hours of Post at Family Man on Saturday and the third race in the Epic Paddle series, location TBD, on Sunday.
