Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s a cloudy and potentially sprinkly start to your Mt. Hood Monday. Our forecast for this week contains a bit of snow, but models continue to trend downward on snow amounts. After that, there’s some hint of actual spring, and accompanying warmer temps, for the lowlands. At that point, the Mt. Hood forecast will finally take a well-deserved summer vacation. Until then… here we go…

Monday starts cloudy with scattered drizzle and ends clear. The snow level will be 6000′ in the morning, 4500′ in the afternoon, and 6000′ overnight. Up to 0.1” precip will fall with p-type depending on elevation. Wind will be W 25 in the morning, W 20 in the afternoon, and WNW 10 overnight.

Tuesday looks sunny all day and cloudy overnight. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 6000′ in the morning and 8000′ in the afternoon and overnight hours. No precip. ?Wind: WNW 10-15 in the morning, WSW 5-15 in the afternoon, and WSW 25-30 overnight.

Wednesday starts rainy and turns snow. The snow level will be 8000′ early, 9500′ around sunrise, 6000′ during the day, 5000′ in the evening, and … get this… 2000′ after midnight. About 0.6” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day. 0.4” rain. 0.2” WE of snow, for 1-2”. Another 0.1-0.3” (accounting for orographics) is forecast overnight, for 1-3” new snow. Wind: WSW 20-30 early, WSW 35-45 mid-morning, W 50 in the afternoon (lift problems) falling to W 35 by Thursday morning.

Thursday sees the snow level around 2000′ early, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 6000′ overnight. Current forecasts suggest 4-5” of new snow during the day. Fingers crossed. More is better, right? Wind: W 35 becoming NW 25-35 then variable to 10 overnight. Models are all over the place for the weekend, but they are hinting we’re done with the colder weather and accumulating snow. What a great end to the forecast season we’ve had! Plenty of hiking for corn snow coming up!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Active weather continues through Thursday, and there’s not a lot of agreement in the models at the end of the week and into the weekend. It does appear we’ll have several days with plenty of wind for playing on the Columbia. Monday starts off with a low pressure system moving into BD and high pressure well south of us off the California coast. Gradients were .05 and .04 at 5am and will increase today. Mid-morning wind will be light westerly, 10mph or less (exception: Viento at 15-20), west of Avery. From Avery to Boardman, you’ll find 12-15mph or so. As things settle out early afternoon and high pressure noses north along the coast, westerlies increase; expect gusty 11-15 from Stevenson to Doug’s. Those locations rise briefly to 15-18 late afternoon before dropping to 7-10 in the evening. You’ll have better luck in the desert. Drive east for gusty 22-26 from Avery to Boardman between 2pm and sunset. River flow is 273kcfs, river temp is 52F, and high temp forecast is 66F.

Tuesday looks sunny, dry, and warm. Before noon, the wind will be either calm or light westerly at less than 10mph. Westerlies slowly build through the afternoon and max out at 10-13 at Stevenson, 16-19 from Viento to The Dalles, and light westerly east of The Dalles. High temp: 70F.

Wednesday will be drizzly to Rowena most of the day, which means you’re heading east of there for the higher quality wind. The day starts light and variable. As a low pressure system moves inland in BC early afternoon (similar to Monday), westerlies pick up. First sign of wind will be areas west of Swell: gusty 15-25. Not long after that, areas east of The Dalles pick up to 25-29 (and Viento too, probably). The central Gorge, Swell to Doug’s, will be late to the game. Eventually, mid to late afternoon, all locations between Stevenson and Threemile pick up to gusty 25-29, perhaps a touch more in a few select locations. Offshore high pressure and inland low pressure are forecast Thursday for 26-29mph between Viento and Rufus. More details as we get closer. “Uncertainty” is the key word beyond Thursday; the GFS and ECMWF are on completely different pages for the weekend weather. Have a great week, and enjoy those westerlies!

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Clouds and scattered sprinkles this morning give way to sunshine this afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and mid 60’s later. Light westerlies early. Moderate later. 2% chance of rainbows. Tuesday will have a few scattered clouds early but will be sunny pretty much all day. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and near 70 later. Nearly calm wind early. Moderate westerlies later. No rainbows. Wednesday will be drizzly all day. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and upper 50’s later. Moderate westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows.

Cycling

Post is too wet to ride. It’s so wet that Dirty Fingers has had to cancel their Thursday shop ride for four weeks in a row. Don’t ride Post, or you’ll do significant trail damage. STOP IT! A good portion of the Eldorado Trail (below the intersection with Riorden Hills Road (near the top, below the clearcut) is closed starting today for approximately 10 days due to nearby timber harvest. Do not enter that area for your safety. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting this summer, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Speaking of trails… it’s too muddy to ride them right now, and it will stay that way for a while. If you ride wet, sloppy trails, you will do significant and potentially permanent damage. Please don’t. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations. Recommendation: ride gravel roads and pavement for a while until the trail systems dry out.

Local Events

Please let me know about events. I often only hear about them if you folx let me know!

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle on Sunday at 11am at the Event Site. The Dirty Fingers Sunday Service rides happens at 9am – this week is the last one. They are fast-paced. If you are not, bring a buddy. The ride is followed by bike race viewing and beer drinking at the shop. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride.
