Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

The weather is finally forecast to shift to warmer and less wet, and that’ll mark the end of the snow forecast for this season. At least it should… it just requires me to sit down and rearrange a few things on the website and email, and so far I haven’t managed. Maybe the sun will motivate! Anyway, we’ll have drizzle on the mountain today with a few snow flurries tonight into Thursday. We then enter a warmer period with intermittent instability and thunderstorm potential (currently highest on Saturday).

The snow level Wednesday morning will be 10,000′. It falls to 4000′ in the evening and 2000′ overnight, but the snow should be done by then. About 0.4” rain is forecast during the day, but more could fall thanks to strong orographics. Models suggest a trace of snow tonight, but strong W/WNW wind could bring a couple unexpected inches of snow. Wind: WSW 35-50 early, W 50-55 midday, W 35-40 in the evening, and WNW 30-40 overnight.

Thursday starts clear, but instability could kick up some afternoon flurries and up to an inch or so of snow. The snow level will be 2000′ early, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 4000′ overnight. Wind: WNW 30 in the morning, NW 20-30 in the afternoon, and variable to 10mph overnight.

Friday will be clear early, may add some thunder in the afternoon, and should be clear again overnight. The free air freezing level will be 4000′ early and 6000′ from midday onward. Wind: variable to 10mph all day. Saturday may bring another round of instability, but Sunday looks clear and warm. Looks like corn snow should finally be developing. Enjoy!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies stick around for a couple of days, but you’ll be heading east of Hood River, and quite likely farther east than that, to get out of the drizzle and into the sunny wind. For now, the weekend forecast looks pretty light; high pressure settles in, sun sticks around, and the air (finally) warms up.

On Wednesday, a cold front swings through the Gorge, a low moves into BC, and offshore high pressure builds. The day starts with gusty westerlies at 10-20 depending on Locations. You’ll also find drizzle as far east as The Dalles through early afternoon. Midday westerlies respond by rising to gusty 25-29 from Lyle or Avery eastward to Boardman. To the west, you’ll find drizzly and gusty 18-22. That’s the story for Wednesday! River flow is 180kcfs, river temp is 53F, and high temp forecast is 62F.

Thursday sees a weak system push through. That combines with decently strong offshore high pressure at 1032mb. Daybreak westerlies will be 12-15mph from Viento to Mosier (5-10 at Stevenson) and 22-25 form Lyle to Boardman. Hold off on driving way to the east. The strongest afternoon wind will be found between Mosier and Rufus with 24-27mph. East of there, the wind drops to 11-14. Same for areas west of Mosier, where drizzle continues intermittently through the day. High temp: 59F.

High pressure pushes inland on Friday. The day starts with 10-13mph westerlies and falls to 5-10mph. That’s according to the models. Offshore high pressure could cause reality to overperform. Models are hinting at high pressure pushing inland for the holiday weekend and keeping the wind light through Monday. That could change, of course, but it does at least look like the weather will be warmer and less wet. Have a great day today!

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast
