Gorge Wind Forecast

This is the time of year when forecasting wind for the Gorge gets tricky. Models don’t handle fall weather all that well, perhaps because things change so quickly when we have weather system after weather system moving through. Anyway, all I can do is give it my best shot! For today, we’ll start with less-than-10 in the western Gorge and 15-18ish in the eastern Gorge. As a frontal system and upper low move inland in the afternoon, we’ll see the wind pick up to gusty 23-26 east of Hood River with gusty 12-15 and rain in the western Gorge.

Tuesday starts with light west wind at 7-1 or so through the entire Gorge with stronger westerlies likely for a short period at Rooster Rock. Given the wind and rain there, it won’t be a good day for naked tanning. Anyway, as a strong low pressure system moves across Washington during the day and high pressure sits off the California coast, we’ll see the wind pick up. We’ll have gusty 25-29 in the afternoon between Mosier and Threemile, or perhaps Rowena and Threemile. It really depends on where the clouds end up. The rainy western Gorge will see up-and-down westerlies at 13-16 or so.

Wednesday’s forecast really depends on the eventual track of a strong low pressure system. A few days ago, it looked like it would go just north of the Columbia, setting off a round of torrential rain and nuking wind. Now it’s forecast to go south of us. With this new track, we’ll have light and variable wind early with westerlies at 13-16 or so through the whole Gorge in the afternoon. Thursday currently looks like west wind at 12-15.

Random Morning Thoughts

It’s raining out here in the Gorge this morning, ending our 92 day streak of dry weather. I’m finding the cool, damp, clean air refreshing after a couple weeks of heat and smoke. If you’re in the Gorge, you’re probably feeling the same way. If not, take a little time to rejoice with us. We can all take a collective sigh of relief that Mother Nature is finally back on our side in the fight against the Eagle Creek Fire.

I know I’ve talked about this before, but taking delight in the good that befalls others can be a powerful way to improve our own sense of happiness. You can think about this in a very simple way: does it feel good to resent, hate, or be jealous of others for their success and happiness? Are these emotions you’d like to cultivate? Because each time they arise within you and you encourage them, you are increasing the chances that they will arise again. That’s neural networks for ya! It’s wiser and better feeling to cultivate a sense of joy at the good that happens to those around us.

I’m guessing it’s pretty easy to be happy for the Gorge and the rain today. Spend a few moments in happy, grateful solidarity with us today. And if you find yourself jealous or resentful of something at some point later today, bring the Gorge and the rain and our happiness and relief to mind again to combat those feelings. Yay, rain! Have an awesome day!

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s going to take a lot more rain that we’ve had so far (.08” in Hood River) to reopen the trails. I will let you know as soon as I hear anything! In the meantime, SDS and Kreps lands (Whoopdee, Underwood, Hospital Hill, etc.) remain closed. Hood River County lands (Post Canyon, Pine Mont trails, etc.) remain closed. The Mt. Hood Ranger district lands remain closed. Trails east of Old Man Pass (McClellan Meadows, eg) are closed. Indian Heaven Wilderness is closed. Trails along I-84 are closed. According to a reliable source, ridgelines in Post Canyon were used to build contingency lines for the Eagle Creek Fire, so trail reconstruction and salvage logging will need to happen in some areas. Thanks for your patience while we wait for more rain to fall. I’ll let you know as soon as I know if anything opens up!

Upcoming Events

There’s $5 Tai Chi at the Hood River Adult Center at 230, kickball at Daubenspeck Park at 6, by-donation yoga at Samadhi at 6, at 6:30 at the Mt. Hood Town Hall, and 6:45 at Pure Yoga in The Dalles. Coming up tomorrow night, there will be a dozen or so monks at Yoga Samadhi for the weekly 6:30 meditation. That’s hundreds of years of meditation experience in one room, and well worth making time to be there if you meditate. As of right now, there aren’t any special events on the calendar for next weekend.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
