Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Monday morning, and it’s starting off windy. That’s the plan for the next couple of days: moderate to strong westerlies for Monday and moderate westerlies on Tuesday. Everything shuts down on Wednesday as temps equalize across the Cascades. It looks like moderate, gusty westerlies return on Thursday with much stronger wind on Friday. Next weekend: more than likely windy!

As for Monday, it’s another sunny, muggy day in the Gorge. It’s the kind of day where you’ll want to get on the water, and that’s going to happen. A bit of marine cloudiness starts the day in the Portland area, and some thunderstorms are popping up around Pendleton. Stay west of the desert today for best results. Early pressure readings were 30.06/29.96/29.95 for 0.10 from PDX to DLS. Westerlies were in the 20-23 range from Viento to Swell with mid teens near The Hook and 10-13ish to the east. The wind should pick up to gusty 22-25 from Stevenson to Hood River by late morning with 15-18 at Rowena and 10-13 east of there. Afternoon wind will likely fall off in the western Gorge. Expect gusty 17-22 from Viento to Hood River with 23-27 from Mosier to Avery, 20-23 at Rufus, and light westerlies to the east of Rufus. Stevenson may overperform at 20-23. River flow readings this morning are 100-163kcfs and should rise this afternoon. High temp forecast: 84F and muggy.

Tuesday kicks off with Dawn Patrol in the 21-24 range from Viento to Swell, perhaps to Hood River and Mosier. East of there: just 10-13, and the same at Stevenson. Models suggest the wind will dip to 17-20 by mid morning and hold through the day (Stevenson to Mosier). Near Rowena, you’ll find 12-15, and east of there, just light wind. It’s possible, given the building high pressure offshore, that reality will beat the models with 21-24 all day. High temp: 86F and muggy.

Wednesday sees temps climb into the mid 90’s all the way from the metro area to the melon-growing region near Hermiston. Expect light and variable wind all day. While the heat will stick around on Thursday, models suggest enough thermal and synoptic scale gradient for low 20’s. Friday: cross you fingers. This morning’s 12k GFS has us lined up for 30-35+. Ensembles agree as do the probability models. Weekend: the setup looks good enough for low 20’s, at least. Have a great week on the river!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

As of Monday, 8/17, the following trails are closed due to fire danger: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and andy lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.

Other news: some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
