Gorge Wind Forecast

The Gorge performed spectacularly yesterday. Sweet spots were The Wall, Rufus, and Arlington. Maybe the far east too, but I didn’t go there. We’ll have another round of westerlies today, but they won’t be of the type to beat you up. Nope. We’re looking at low to mid 20’s at the most. The next couple of days, Tuesday and Wednesday, will be mostly calm with a shot at teen-strength wind Wednesday afternoon. After that, we’re back to offshore low pressure negatively affecting the wind.

For Monday, we’ve got weak to moderate offshore high pressure and weak low pressure in the desert. Yesterday’s low is in Idaho, and could send some high clouds over the desert this afternoon. That’s fine. You won’t be chasing the wind out there today. Dawn Patrol wind is all over the map, with readings anywhere between 5-10 and 20-25. Give it a couple hours. Around 11am, the wind steadies out to 17-20 from Viento to The Dalles with 7-10 at Stevenson and 12-15 in the eastern Gorge. East of The Dalles, the wind goes calm-ish this afternoon. Rufus drops to 10-13. That only leaves us with the western Gorge, where we’ll see 20-23 from Viento to Avery early afternoon and 22-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles later in the afternoon. River flow is 312kcfs, river temp is 53F, and high temp forecast is 63F.

Tuesday starts with very light westerlies or calm wind. Afternoon sees the wind turn around and blow E 5-10 all the way from Rooster east to Maryhill or thereabouts. High temp: 76F. Wednesday starts with E 5-10 near Cascade Locks. Those light easterlies fill to Arlington for a few hours midday. We then see a switch to gusty westerlies at 14-18 between Viento and Rooster with 10-13 at Stevenson and continued 5-10mph easterlies in the eastern Gorge. High temp: 81F.

Looking deeper into the week, we see offshore low pressure / troughiness. That doesn’t bode well for strong or consistent westerlies. Models for next weekend are suggesting a potential repeat of this weekend: wet with one day of strong wind. We’ll keep an eye on it!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

There was an event on 5/22 on Dog River trail, which suggests it may be open. That’s not confirmed. A good portion of the Eldorado Trail (below the intersection with Riorden Hills Road (near the top, below the clearcut) is closed starting today for at least the next few days. Do not enter that area for your safety. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
