Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Sunday morning, and it’s windy out there! CGW2 canceled today’s swap meet due to “mud and puddles in Lot 1”, but there’s an unverifiable rumor via iWindsurf forums (I tried to chase it down on the purported source, NWKite) of an unofficial swap on the south side of the Event Site parking lot this morning. If we all agree that the rumor is true and participate, then there will be a swap. It’s good timing – the wind will be better this afternoon. Looking at tomorrow, we have less wind, but still plenty for getting on the river. Tuesday, however, just looks sunny, dry, and calm. A sweet little compact low pressure system has moved across the Cascades on this chilly Sunday morning, and high pressure is building offshore. Just look out your window at the river and clouds, and you’ll see that it’s a windy day! Early gradients were 0.15 (pdx-dls) and 0.11 (dls-psc), and the offshore high pressure will build to 1026mb today. As of 7am, the low was still a little too close; wind speeds were all over the map at 15-30mph. Drizzle will continue to fall east of Arlington and west of Hood River until early afternoon.

So, your morning window will be Mosier to Rufus with gusty 25-30 (less near Rowena). You’re best served by waiting. By late morning or early afternoon, you’ll find 30-35 between Lyle (or perhaps Mosier) and Arlington with gusty 20-30 west of Mosier (steadiest at Viento, but still not all that reliable and probably drizzly). Want Threemile or Boardman? No problem. By early to mid afternoon, you’ll have 30-35mph at those locations too. Late in the afternoon, Stevenson drops to 10ish, and the Hood River area drops to gusty 14-20. River flow is 307kcfs – that’s really pushing it at The Wall and Rufus. River temp is 54F, and high temp forecast for Hood River is 59F. Arlington: 61F.

That low pressure system moves off to the east on Monday and leaves us under the influence of offshore high pressure. The day starts with 14-17 east of The Dalles and 11-14 in the west. Don’t drive east – the wind will eventually turn light and variable east of Rufus. Midday wind: 19-22 from Stevenson to Mosier with 7-10 east of Rufus. Afternoon: 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles with light/variable wind east of The Dalles. High temp: 64F. Tuesday looks completely calm, sunny, and rain-free with the high temp in the mid 70’s.

Jones, Sauvie’s, Coast

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – Special Bonus Memorial Day Weekend Forecast

When I looked at 6am, the temp had finally dropped to 32F at 5000′ on Mt. Hood. Yesterday, the mountain picked up about 0.75” rain. Just add that to the snow water equivalent of the snowpack! Today into tomorrow, snow will fall. As a matter of fact, it looks downright stormy up there with the 6am hour reading at 48-61mph at 6300′. That’s enough to shut down lifts, for sure!

For the rest of Sunday, we’ll see snowy, stormy weather. The snow level will be 4500′ early, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 3000′ overnight. Most of the moisture has already moved through, but strong orographic effects will keep the snow falling. About 0.4” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day, for 4-5” new. Another 0.3” is forecast overnight for 3-4” more. Reality could overperform thanks to the wind: NW 35-45 in the morning, W 35 in the afternoon, and NW 25-35 overnight.

Monday will be cloudy with a few additional flurries. The snow level will be 3000′ in the morning and will rise to 6500′ in the afternoon. Just a trace of snow is forecast. Wind: NW 25-35 early fading to variable-to-15 in the afternoon. Tuesday looks warm and sunny with the freezing level around 9000′. The next few days also look warm. So… maybe this weekend is the last snow of the season?

Hood River Weather Forecast

Drizzle this morning ends around 11am and the sky turns mostly cloudy. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and upper 50’s later. Strong westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows. Monday will be dry and mostly cloudy. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and mid 60’s later. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Tuesday will be sunny and dry. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and mid 70’s later. Calm wind. No rainbows.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

CGW2 canceled today’s swap meet due to “mud and puddle in Lot 1”. Rumor has it via the iWind forums that the NWKite forums said there’s an unofficial swap in the south side of the Event Site. I was unable to locate that post on NWKite, but don’t let that stop you! Other things today: the potential for the Tau Herculids meteor shower tonight, and Monday night. Tonight (Sunday) at Yoga Samadhi, two Buddhist nuns are giving a talk and meditation guidance at 6:30pm.

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. The Dirty Fingers Sunday Service rides happens at 9am – this week is the last one. They are fast-paced. If you are not, bring a buddy. The ride is followed by bike race viewing and beer drinking at the shop. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride.

Cycling

There was an event on 5/22 on Dog River trail, which suggests it may be open. That’s not confirmed. A good portion of the Eldorado Trail (below the intersection with Riorden Hills Road (near the top, below the clearcut) is closed starting today for at least the next few days. Do not enter that area for your safety. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
