Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies are done for a few days as inland high pressure combines with a coastally located heat low for a switch to easterly wind. Along with the lighter wind, we’ll have heat. All your river toys will come in handy as floating objects for a swim.

For Monday, gradients started at 0.03 and 0.00, a sign that you definitely don’t want to be in the eastern Gorge. While the morning will likely see some light westerlies, 8-11 from Viento to Swell, that should end by midday. Light east flow replaces the westerlies: 5-10 or less, perhaps 8-12 near Stevenson. River flow is 108kcfs and temp is 70 degrees.

Tuesday will be peak easterly day. Morning wind at 25-30 at Rooster and Stevenson, 20-25 near Viento, holds through early afternoon and backs to 20-25. The rest of the Gorge will see light wind early with a slow build to E 8-12 in the afternoon. By “rest of the Gorge”, I mean Swell all the way to Arlington.

Wednesday’s wind won’t help with the heat and humidity, because it won’t last long. Morning easterlies at 10-15 near Rooster and Stevenson and possibly Viento die off by midday. We’re left with light and variable wind, increasing humidity, and temps that soar near 100. It’ll be a nice day for a swim. It appears westerlies will return on Thursday with upper teens or low 20’s.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified – swell forecast courtesy of National Weather Service). Monday: 25-30/25-30/30-40, W swell 5′ at 11 seconds. Hood River Weather Forecast

Clear sky and dry air for Monday: temps in the low 50’s (yay – open all the windows) early and upper 80’s later (close them before this). Light and variable wind. No rainbows. Tuesday looks hotter and more dry. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and near 90 later. Light east wind. No rainbows. Wednesday starts clear and ends with high clouds and thunderheads over the Cascades with a wee chance of thunder. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and upper 90’s in the afternoon. Humidity increases during the day. Light and variable wind. No rainbows. Extending the forecast one day: Thursday brings high clouds and heat with a chance of thunder. Temps will be in the upper 60’s early (possibly a record high-low for the day) and low to mid 90’s later. MUGGY. Miserable. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

For road bikers: chip seal along Highway 30 from Mosier eastward just had a layer of sticky oil added to the top. Reports are that it could use some time to cure before it’s good for biking. Riorden Hill Road will remain closed from the end of the pavement to Family Man weekdays through the beginning of September. That means associated trails are also closed weekdays for that time period (Family Man, Middle School, Float On). The kids bike race is still on this Saturday morning at Family Man. As for Kreps/SDS lands, no word since the rain… they haven’t issued a closure yet!

All other trails are open – I received confirmation of Huffman Peak too. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.
