Monday. 8/5. Gorge lighter wind, lesser events, and morer meteors.

This is Temira.
This is Temira!

Thank you all for your donations and kind words during last month’s pledge drive. Whew. Glad that’s over. I always feel a little weird asking for donations. That said, should you like to get on the daily email list (where you can occasionally win cool stuff), please take the time to click on the sun below and make a donation of $12 or more. That gets you a year’s subscription, and it makes me smile, because I know then that the hard work I put into this is worth a lot to you. Thank you for reading my work, and thank you for donating. Have a wonderful day!

Random Thoughts you may or may not regret reading…

Moisture does not belong in the air. It belongs in the water. Muggy weather = thumbs down. Sunshine = thumbs up. Peaches = double thumbs up.

Wind forecast

Although it’s basically glassy on the river this morning, the glassiness will last about as long as my morning glassy-eyed wakeup time – not long. There was .06 between Portland and The Dalles at 7am, and that’ll be enough for 13-15 by mid-morning, picking up to gusty 17-21 this afternoon. Strongest wind today will be from Stevenson to Mosier. ‘

Tomorrow sees low pressure off the coast, high pressure inland, and hot, muggy weather. Blech. Even with that non-ideal setup, westerlies should pick up to 13-15 in the afternoon.

Wednesday starts off light, but models are predicting a strong late-afternoon burst. It’s an interesting feature, and one that’s a little too micro-forecasting for this far out. But do keep it in mind if you’re planning on racing boats Wednesday afternoon.

If you need a new window in one of your sails, you can get one at Northwave for 15% off through August by mentioning you read about it here.

Coming up tonight, there are a couple of bike rides: The Mountain View Cycles crew has a casual ride from the shop to the Thirsty Woman in Mosier, leaving the shop at 6:30, and returning after dark. Bring lights and a helmet for this ride, and do not wear spandex. Also bring an appetite for French Fries, because the fries at the TW are delicious. Hand-cut. Skin-on. Yum.

The Columbia Gorge Triathlon club has a bike ride too – meet them at the China Gorge parking lot at 5:30 for a ride to Rowena Crest, or for a shorter recovery ride to Mosier. Perhaps the spandex tri crowd will meet up with the spandex-free booze cruise crowd for a battle of epic proportions?

Coming up next weekend, there’s more sailboat racing in the Gorge, so cross your fingers for wind: There’s the Tasar World Championships in Cascade Locks on Saturday, and also on Saturday, it’s the Double Damned race from Cascade Locks to The Dalles. And then on Sunday, the Perseid Meteor shower kicks off for this year – put that one on your calendar for the wee hours, because it’s always a great show!

Have an awesome day today!
