Gorge Wind Forecast
Easterlies stick around through the weekend. If you’re going after them, dress warmly; morning temps will be in the mid 40’s. We have a shot at westerlies on Monday, at least in the morning. After Monday, the weather goes back to warm, mild, and not-very-windy through Thursday or so.
Friday starts with pressures of 30.02/30.08/30.08 for 0.06 (pdx-dls) gradient. That’s not much, and it will fade during the day. Your best shot is 20mph easterlies at Viento this morning with 15-20 at Rooster and Stevenson. By late morning or early afternoon, the wind drops to 10 at Viento, 15 at Stevenson, and turns to light westerlies or calm wind at Rooster. The wind continues to fade through the evening. River flow readings this morning are 61-91kcfs, river temp is 65F, and high temp is 81F.
Saturday sees stronger gradients. Easterlies push up into the hills as well which could cause them to underperform on the river. For now, let’s call the morning this way: 30ish at Rooster and 20-25 at Cascade Locks and Viento. Models suggest the wind will add 5mph or so mid-morning before dropping to 20-25mph in the afternoon and 15-20mph in the early evening. High temp: 79F.
Sunday keeps the wind more confined to lower elevations. That should give us at least as much wind as Saturday or even slightly more. The afternoon fade will be on the same schedule, and the high temp will be nearly the same.
Models currently suggest a brief round of westerlies at 16-19 on Monday morning from Viento to Swell before a fade to 11-14 by mid to late morning. Variable wind on Tuesday is followed by easterlies on Wednesday. Models hint at a pattern change next weekend. It’s possible we could see some strong eastern Gorge westerlies from this, but that’s just speculation at this point. Have a great weekend!

Local-ish Events
Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! The Columbia Gorge Marathon is this Sunday. Expect lots of traffic in town and also on the Twin Tunnels trail. Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. The Columbia Gorge Tri Club has a weekly workout at Mayer Park in Rowena at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint and Post n’ Pinot are done for the season due to darkness. There’s a free Zumba class at 6pm in the parking lot of One Community Health in The Dalles on Wednesday. Providence is sponsoring a walking program called Healthy Strides. Meets Weds at May Street 5:30pm, through Nov 16. All ages welcome, and there’s swag!
Cycling
It’s dusty out there… Hood River County has reopened all motorized trails to motorized use. The following trails are closed to all uses, and some might not have signage saying they are closed: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and any lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.
The road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
