The Forecast

Gorge Wind Forecast

While it might be windy out there today, AQI levels are squarely in the “hazardous” range, and you’ll be putting your health at risk if you exercise outdoors. Rest day time. When will the low-level smoke clear? Hopefully Sunday. Fingers crossed.

Wind Friday will start at 18-22ish from Viento to Swell. Afternoon wind picks up to gusty 19-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles. River flow: 110kcfs. Temp: 68. High temp today: who knows – the forest is 84 but the smoke will knock that down quite a bit.

Saturday starts with 18-22 from Viento to Swell with 10-13 to the east. Afternoon wind picks up to gusty 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Again, it’ll probably be unsafe to go outside. Sunday: Hopefully this will be far enough out that the smoke will start to dissipate. However, a low offshore will turn upper flow SW. That’ll probably pull in smoke from areas to the south. Westerlies start at 21-24 from Viento to Mosier and climb to 26-28 from Stevenson to Arlington. Monday: light and variable.

Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, parking restrictions now apply Friday through Sunday. Remember: crowds lead to closures. Kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you will be ticketed. Lyle: loved to death. Roosevelt: still closed due to wind damage from earlier this year. Mosier is only available to residents of 97040 (Mosier).

Coast, Jones, Sauvie’st

Coast (north/central/south – swell forecast provided by NWS. Wind northerly except as noted). Friday: LTW/LTW/LTV, NW swell 1′ AM going to 3′ at 7 seconds later. Saturday: LTW/LTW/LTV, NW 2′ @ 7. Sunday: S10-15/S5-10/LTV, W 2′ @ 6. Jones Friday: 7-10. Saturday: 5-8. Sunday: LTV. Sauvie’s Friday-Sunday: LTV.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Smoke sticks around all day. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and mid 70’s (??) later. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Don’t go outside – air quality is dangerous. Saturday starts smoky and ends less smoky but still smoky, probably. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and upper 70’s (??) later. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Sunday will probably have less low-level smoke, but upper flow from the SW keeps it smoky above. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and upper 70’s (??) later. Strong westerlies. No rainbows.     Looking for a complete Columbia Gorge forecast? Looking for more humor in your weather? Obscenities? Cycling

9/5: Hood River County lands are now closed between 9pm and 5am due to extreme fire danger and the likelihood of nighttime users starting a fire. Lands are still open during the day. Moto use is limited to developed roads. Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and Underwood are closed due to fire danger. Respect the closures. Other Post news: Eldorado has reopened, as have other trails associated with that particular timber harvest closure.

Local Events

Weekly events: there are sailboat races at the Hood River Marina every Wednesday evening. Dirty Fingers has a group mountain bike ride Thursday nights at 5:30pm. The small boat group has a friendly and distanced paddle on, I believe, Thursday nights. Cheno has an outdoor HIIT workout at Columbia High School in White Salmon at 6pm on Wednesday nights. That’s pretty much it for outdoor sports. There is a BLM rally every Tuesday evening at 5:30 at the Salmon Fountain in Hood River, and there’s a White Coats for BLM rally every Wednesday evening at 6pm at 12th and May.

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Mt. Hood Meadows allows hiking within the permit area. However, you will need to park outside their parking lots. Timberline is open for lift-serve skiing with exemplary guidelines for protecting guests and staff from the transmission of novel coronavirus. Please read their guidelines and rules here. Well done, T-Line! The Mt. Hood weather forecast will be on vacation unless something interesting happens in the weather up there. Timberline is allowing uphill access outside the permit area on the climbers’ trail only.

Have an awesome day!
