Gorge Wind Forecast

There’s not all that much wind out there, and there’s not much gradient to support that not-much wind: just .04 (pdx-dls) and .03 (dls-psc). This is due to weak high pressure inland and a low off the coast of BC, which has our Pacific High squished down near Cali. But hey, the river temp is 67 degrees, and flow is 164kcfs. We’ll see the westerlies slowly build to the 10-13 range by noon from Cascade Locks to The Dalles. Later in the day, a weak weather system will push into BC, giving the area just enough enough for gusty 15-18 from Cascade Locks to The Dalles. Today, by the way, is both the Meljes 24 championships in cAscade Locks and the Bridge of the Gods Kitefest pro event in Stevenson.

That offshore low pushes into BC tomorrow and the offshore high moves up the coast. Inland high pressure sticks around for much of the day, keeping gradients from intensifying. It looks like we’ll see 7-10 from Cascade Locks to Swell to start the day with 13-16 in the afternoon from Cascade Locks to Hood River. The BOTG amateur contest is tomorrow and the Meljes 24 races continue.

Sunday’s setup looks better. As the day goes on, high pressure will dominate the offshore waters while low pressure will inundate the Columbia Basin. The day starts off with 16-19 from Cascade Locks to Hood River. That’s not all that much, but we’ll see the wind build to 24-27 in the afternoon from Stevenson to The Dalles. It’s possible the wind will beat the forecast on Sunday.

It’s worth mentioning that Sunday is the Bridge of the Gods Kitefest Blowout. I’ve been informed by the organizer that all downwind craft are welcome. There is no boat support during the Blowout, so you must be capable of making the entire distance without help (or self-rescuing and hitchhiking!).

Random Morning Thoughts

As part of my education as a therapist, I thought it would be helpful to take a suicide intervention class. So that’s what I’m doing with my Thursday and Friday this week. One of the key pieces to suicide intervention is following up on the little warning signs that people broadcast. Unfortunately, asking these sorts of personal questions crosses a cultural boundary – we don’t want to pry into the business of others.

For most of us, however, a simple question along the lines of, “Hey, what’s going on? You seem bummed out,” isn’t going to constitute a horrendous breach of social etiquette. But we don’t ask, both because of the cultural piece and because of our own issues around sitting with the pain of others, perhaps feeling incompetent about what to say in distressing situations. That was a run-on sentence, I do believe. Or at least poor grammar.

Anyway, next time you see someone looking miserable. Check in. They’ll probably be touched you did, and you’ll probably find yourself feeling happier and more connected with the world because you expressed compassion. Helping feels good. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Road and Mountain Biking

I’ve been saying all week that Hospital Hill and Whoopdee were going to close, but there hasn’t been any word yet. So, keep riding! (That should ensure an email shows up in my inbox today announcing a fire season closure). Saturday will be very sticky for mountain biking – it’s going to be muggy.

Upcoming Events

This weekend is filled with events: the Meljes 24 championships in Cascade Locks, the Bridge of the Gods Kitefest in Stevenson with the pro contest on the schedule today, the amatuer contest scheduled tomorrow, and the blowout for all downwind floating objects on Sunday. There are also hundreds of downwind paddlers running shuttles between Viento and Hood River today and tomorrow for the Gorge Downwind Champs. There’s a windsurfing race at Hood River’s Event Site tomorrow and a slider jam on the spit in the evening.

Every Friday at 7am is the Kickstand Donut run where jogging four miles gets you a cup of coffee and a donut. The Bridge of the Gods Kitefest party is at River City tonight. There’s a work party at Starvation Creek tomorrow from 9 to 1, and the movie Trolls at The Dalles Movies in the party tomorrow night at dusk. There’s a trail run in Post Canyon tomorrow morning at 8am, a women’s bike ride from Mountain View Cycles at 9.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
