Gorge Wind Forecast

There’s enough wind on the river on the lovely Friday morning for you to be out there doing your thing. Most of the day will bring enough wind for most of you to end up with a smile on your face. Westerlies continue on Saturday, and then the wind shuts down Sunday, not to return until late Monday or better yet, Tuesday.

Looking deeper into Friday’s details, we see offshore high pressure, zero marine clouds in Portland, a trough forecast to move inland, and a temp gradient across the Cascades. The day starts with gradients of .10 (pdx-dls), .01 (dls-psc), and high pressure offshore. Wind speeds are mostly in the 14-17 range with the exception of Arlington (calm) and Viento (mid 20’s). Your morning session, through 11am or so, brings 21-24 from Viento to Mosier with 14-17 from Lyle to Doug’s and light wind to the east. Stevenson has a slow climb to 21-24. It’s likely we’ll see a midday lull thanks to desert heating. Do not despair. That trough moves inland and nudges the gradients and wind speeds upward late afternoon through the evening. You’ll find gustier 24-27 from Stevenson to Rufus mid to late afternoon. Arlington joins in this evening. It’s likely the wind will only last a couple hours at Swell, so be quick to take advantage. River flow: 158kcfs (250kcfs below normal for this date, a sign of how bad the drought is). River temp is 61F. High temp forecast: 85F.

Let’s look at Saturday. For one, it looks muggy. For two, it looks windy, but you’ll have to be strategic about your timing. Dawn Patrol westerlies should be 22-25mph from Viento to Mosier with 13-16 near Lyle and Stevenson and light wind east of The Dalles. Get it quick. Heating in Portland knocks the wind down to gusty 14-17 from Stevenson to The Dalles midday. If you exercise patience, you’ll be the beneficiary of afternoon thermal assistance; models call for 21-24 from Mosier to Doug’s after 5pm with 13-16 west of Mosier and eastward from The Dalles to Rufus. High temp: 84F.

Sunday. Meh. We could see 10-13 to start the day from Stevenson to Swell. East of there: just some light westerly flow, not even enough to be labeled “wind”. Models suggest afternoon will bring 91 degrees and light easterlies. Westerlies return late Monday and should be stronger on Tuesday and Wednesday when temps are forecast to drop back into the 80’s. Another option for the next few day: the Oregon Coast, where the wind will be quite strong. Have a great day!
