Friday. Sunshine!!!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s a sunny Friday on the mountain, and you’re probably going to find some nice groom if you head up there today. Expect sun and light wind all day with clouds tonight. The free air freezing level will be 3500′ in the morning and 8000′ in the afternoon. No precip. NE wind at 15 this morning and N 5 this afternoon.

Saturday starts off cloudy. Showers move in around 8am and continue through 2pm, after which we’ll have rainbows and then clear sky. The snow level will be 8000′ all day, dropping to a free air freezing level of 1000′ after midnight under clear sky. We’ll see about 1/8-1/4” of rain in the rainy period. Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued

Sunday’s models are giving a mixed forecast. The GFS suggests clear sky and no precip. The ECMWF suggests clouds and a couple inches of snow. Both models suggest a pass-level snow level of around 3000′-4000′. Let’s split the difference and go with cloudy sky and up to 1” of snow during the day. Continuing the guessing, we’ll have NW wind at 35 in the morning and 15 in the afternoon, dropping to NW 5 overnight.

Models are in better agreement about Monday: clear sky and sunshine. The free air freezing level will be 1500′ early and 4000′ in the afternoon. No precip. NW wind at 5 in the mornign and NW wind at 10 in the afternoon. Next chance of precip is Thursday, but it looks like rainy precip, not snowy precip.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Friday, and it looks like some of you got out on the river yesterday. Good work! Today looks pretty light for river surfing: W 7-11 everywhere this morning, backing off to calm wind in the eastern Gorge and W 4-7 in the western Gorge this afternoon. Saturday looks nice. A weather system moves through early and high pressure builds off the coast. This is pretty ideal, and should give us W 5-10 early in the day with W 26-30 in the afternoon at the windiest spots.

The strongest, steadiest wind on Saturday will like be from Mosier to Arlington, but it’s possible, although unlikely, that Swell and Hood River will also see strong steady wind. More likely is this scenario: gusty W 12-15 at Stevenson, gusty W 18-22 from Swell to Hood River.

Looking at Sunday, we’ll start off with a burst of 24-28 pre-dawn and then see the wind back off as high pressure builds in. As of right now, it looks like most of the day will have 13-16 at Stevenson, 23-26 from Swell to Doug’s, and 13-16 further east. Monday currently looks like a light west wind day.

Random Morning Thoughts

Being part of the extreme sports community, I often hear people say this: “I’m too old to take up (x),” or “I’ve heard you can’t learn (x) after (age).” Incorporating cultural expectations of what we can or can’t do due to our age limits our opportunities in life. Sure, there may be physical limitations as to the level at which you can participate, but there’s nothing saying you can’t give it a shot. Self-limitation doesn’t just apply to extreme sports – it applies to schooling, learning, relationships, etc.

We all have different beliefs about whether this lifetime is our only lifetime. We may believe in reincarnation, an afterlife of heaven or hell, simple death, or something else. No matter our beliefs, we may as well act as-if this is our only time in this form with this sense of self (if you believe in a self!) upon this planet.

Rather than embracing a “No” or an “I can’t”, embrace the “Why the heck not?!” and give that thing you’ve been contemplating a try. Life, as we all know, is short. Losing days, hours, or opportunities to fear or cultural expectations only limits our chances for joy and happiness. Whatever that thing is that you’ve been wondering about, give it a shot. You’re young enough, smart enough, agile enough and just plan everything enough to make it happen to whatever extent you can. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Seriously, all you have to do is look out the window to see that today is going to be awesome. Blue sky all around! Blue sky all day, with clouds tonight. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon. Light west wind. No rainbows, but that’s okay, because we had hours of rainbows yesterday. Saturday looks cloudy in the morning with showers midday and partly cloudy sky in the afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 40s’ early and the upper 50’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, strong west wind in the afternoon. 68% chance of rainbows.

Sunday may see some frost in the morning, especially above 1000′. Other than that, the day looks clear and sunny. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the mid 50’s in the afternoon. Actually, I should add a disclaimer: the GFS says we will be dry and sunny on Sunday, and the ECMWF is calling for showers. So never mind that forecast of sun. Let’s go with clouds and a slight chance of sprinkles. We’ll have to see what the models say tomorrow. Monday looks sunny. In the frost forecast, there’s a 50% chance on Sunday, especially above 1000′. There’s a 90% chance of frost on Monday morning.

Road and Mountain Biking

Update: Gorge 400 out of Wyeth, despite multiple reports to the contrary, is most definitely not open to bikes yet. There are sections of the trail buried under 4′ of snow from this winter’s avalanches. You could, theoretically hike the 400 (I went running there yesterday). Other than that, Syncline, Columbia Hills, and Sandy Ridge are open.

Upcoming Events

Every Friday at 7am, you can get your butt out of bed early and earn free food. All you have to do is show up at Kickstand Coffee and jog 4.1 miles. That’ll get you a free cup of coffee and a donut.

Looking ahead to the weekend, the Gorge Roubaix bike race is on Saturday, and the Gorge Gravel Grinder ride is on Sunday. That should be awesome with 30-35mph west wind on Sunday. Pacific Hermitage is having a garden party on Saturday – meal at 11, work party at 1, tea with monks at 3. There’s a free half-day meditation retreat on the 8th of April at Yoga Samadhi, btw. Hood River Appreciation Day is at Meadows all day this Sunday, April 2nd.

Have an awesome day today!
