Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s Friday morning, and it’s above 50 degrees on Mt. Hood, which is pretty darn impressive! It’ll stay warm up there today with a chance of sprinkles or light rain from mid-afternoon on. The precip will switch to light snow over the weekend and through the early part of next week, after which we return to warm, sunny weather.

For Friday, expect clear sky in the mornign with clouds and sprinkles from mid-afternoon on. The snow level (free air freezing level!) will be 13,000′ early, 10,000′ in the afternoon, and 3000′ after midnight. Just a trace of rain will fall. Wind will be variable to 20 mph all day and W 15 overnight.

Saturday looks sunny early, cloudy in the afternoon, and snowy overnight. The snow level will be 3000′ in the morning, 5500′ in the afternoon, and 3500′ overnight. About .3” WV falls overnight, for 1-3” of new snow. Widn will be W 15-20 all day.

Sunday looks partly cloudy with flurries and perhaps clear in the afternoon – there’s disagreement in the models. Anyway, the snow level will be 4000′ during the day and 2000′ after midnight. Up to 3” of snow will fall in the 24 period. Wind will be W 20 in the morning, WSW 15 in the afternoon, and W 5 overnight. Monday looks partly cloudy with flurries during the day and clear overnight. The snow level will start at 2000′ and end up around 5500′ overnight. NW wind will build to 20mph. After Monday, we head back into clear sky and warm weather.

Random Morning Thoughts

It’s amazing how a sense of urgency can self-perpetuate. When we’re feeling stressed or short on time, we start to believe that we absolutely must keep moving and getting stuff done. This often involves setting aside the things that are important to us in favor of the things that are responsibilities imposed from the outside. We may even feel guilty if we take time out for ourselves and neglect responsibilities we have to others.

This is very silly. Ridiculous, even. We sacrifice our well-being so others can feel better. Even more ridiculous is that we sacrifice personal well-being so a corporation can do better. Yes, we are brainwashed into thinking that we are suffering on behalf of a team, but the truth is that we are suffering so someone, somewhere, can have more money in their pocket.

Yes, I am taking this to an extreme, but I’m doing so to get you to reflect more deeply on the “why” behind the sense of urgency or responsibilities in your life. In situations where you are sacrificing your well-being, take the time to understand exactly why you are doing this and who is benefiting. Notice if there are ways you can carve out space to nourish yourself. May you be awake and aware. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Friday morning, and it’s already windy in the Gorge. The setup today involves a low pressure system offshore and a heat low in the desert along with a warm front moving in from the south. All these dynamics are not ideal, but they may be offset by the fact that a strong marine push to the west will combine with an inversion and very stable atmosphere through mid-afternoon.

Morning westerlies will be confined to the west half of the Gorge; 20-24 from Viento to Rowena looks good through mid-morning. After that, the desert heat low drops the desert surface pressure, sending the wind into the 30+ range from Mosier to Arlington. The nukingest wind will likely be from Lyle to Rowena. Swell is a maybe today and depends on how far east the marine air moves. It looks like the atmosphere will destabilize a bit after 2pm, so the steadiest wind will occur before that. River temp is 50 degrees. Flow is 291kcfs, meaning the current will be strong at Rufus but probably still low enough for good swell.

Low pressure moves overhead on Saturday and combines with offshore high pressure for continued west wind. In the morning, we’ll have 5-10 in the west wind 12-15 east of Mosier. Afternoon westerlies look like 10-13 from Stevenson to Mosier and 24-28 from Lyle to Rufus with less farther east. Sunday sees low pressure move east and high pressure build off the coast. Westerlies climb to 24-27 from Mosier to Arlington in the afternoon with 15-18 west of Mosier. Monday looks like a repeat of Sunday.
