Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

I was just perusing The Internets and came across a forecast for gigantic epic weekend of powder on the mountain. I’m not really seeing that unless every band of moisture lines up perfectly. We will see enough new snow to refresh the slopes, but I don’t think we’ll see enough for bottomless freshies! The general long-range picture is snow through Monday and the potential for some rain on Tuesday, but the details aren’t clear yet.

For Friday, we’ll have a snowy day on Mt. Hood. The snow level will be about 500′ early, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 0-500′ overnight. About .2-.3” water value (WV) falls during the day, for 2-4” of new snow. Another .6” WV falls tonight, for 6-7” of new. Wind will be SW 20-25 all day and W 30 after midnight.

Saturday starts out snowy and windy. Both the snowfall rate and wind will decrease as the day goes on. The snow level will be 0-500′ early, 1500′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ or less overnight. About .3” WV falls during the day, for 3-4” snow. The overnight forecast is unclear, with .1”+ falling, for up to 5” new snow. Wind Saturday will be W 30 early, fading to S 10-15 in the afternoon and light and variable overnight.

Sunday sees light snowfall in the morning, clear sky in the afternoon, and light snowfall overnight. The snow level will be less than 1000′ early, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 0-500′ after midnight. About an inch of new snow will fall during the day, and a couple inches will fall overnight. Wind will be light and variable early and NW 15-20 in the afternoon and evening.

Monday starts off cloudy with light snow and turns partly cloudy with occasional flurries. The snow level will be 0-500′ early, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 1500′ overnight. Total snowfall will be around 1”. Wind will be NW 20 in the morning NW 10 in the afternoon, and NNW 20 in the evening.

Details for Tuesday are unclear, but it does looks like the snow level will rise to 7000′ or so with light rain possible. The Euro brings in heavier rain. In other words, we don’t know what will happen, so we’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime, enjoy the fresh snow!

Random Morning Thoughts

We often get hyper-focused on the things that feel out of control in our lives. Lack of control can feel stressful. To counteract this, we can consciously turn our attention to places where we feel like we have control. Alternatively, we can create control in other areas of our lives.

For example, people often make a resolution (unconsciously) to adhere to some sort of food-related plan when other things are going poorly in their life. Perhaps they will go on a diet. Count calories. Decide to become vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, or paleo. Perhaps the need for control comes out in a different way: a clean house, more time spent at work, or new hobbies.

The trick to doing this in a healthy way is to do it consciously. Acknowledge that you need to feel more in control of your life, and pick a domain in which to cultivate it. Make a choice, reflect upon the link with whatever is happening for you, and relax into the helpful resolution you’ve made. Control it. Don’t let it control you. And relinquish it when it has served its purpose. May you be at ease. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Gorge Wind Forecast

For Friday, we’ll have east wind at 10-15 early. After 9am or so, the wind will turn around and blow W 5-10 in the western Gorge and gusty 21-26 east of The Dalles. Saturday looks like W 10-13 in the morning and light and variable wind in the afternoon. Sunday starts out with W 5 and picks up to gusty 18-22 from Stevenson to Maryhill. Monday starts out calm and picks up to W 8-12. Tuesday, if the forecast holds, looks like a strong, steady west wind day.

Road and Mountain Biking

It rained yesterday, and more is on the way today. Plus it’s going to snow above 1000′ or so. Not much, but a bit. That means our trails are too muddy to ride without damaging them. If you’ve been riding in the mud, please come restore your karma by attending the HRATS work party on Saturday morning, 9:30am, at the bottom of Mitchell Ridge.

Upcoming Events

Today we have the Kickstand Coffee run at 7am: jog or walk 4.1 miles and you get a free cup of coffee and a donut. There’s a trail run in Post Canyon at 8am tomorrow morning. Looking ahead to the weekend, there’s a ski mountaineering race on Saturday at Timberline, there’s a CGWA Hatchery work party, and there’s an HRATS work party on Mitchell Ridge. The Wheatfield Half Marathon is Sunday in The Dalles.
