Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s a rainy morning as I write this forecast, and the wind through the Gorge isn’t doing all that much. The western Gorge has 10-15 or so, and the eastern Gorge is under 10mph. We’re under the impact of a strong cross-Pacific jet stream right now, and that’s pushed a weather system into the region. As this system moves eastward this afternoon and weak high pressure builds off the coast, the wind will pick up a bit. We’ll have light westerlies through early afternoon. The wind will then pick up to 20-23 east of the low clouds, probably reaching those speeds between The Dalles and Arlington, possibly at Rowena too. The Stevenson to Mosier stretch will probably max out around 12-15 today.

Weak high pressure builds on Saturday, and the sun returns to the Gorge. We’ll see westerlies at 7-10 to start the day. High pressure builds inland during the day and a weak system approaches land well to our north late in the day. The combination of the two will bump the wind up to gusty 20-24 between Stevenson and Rufus during the afternoon. (continued after the chart)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued.

That system moves inland well to the north on Sunday morning, which will keep us in weak onshore flow. The wind will start out at W 7-10 through the whole Gorge. By afternoon, the wind will die off east of The Dalles and pick up to 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River. Monday currently looks light and variable.

The long-range forecast contains some agreement on Tuesday and Wednesday, hinting at a couple of stronger west wind days. Models for the end of next week are in complete disagreement, so there’s no ability for any speculation beyond early next week.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The snow level is around 8000′ today, and it will be wet and windy on the hill. Definitely not the best day to be hanging out up high.

Random Morning Thoughts

I just finished up my second year of grad school last night. Wow. I’m feeling the pressure of year three looming ahead of me, and I just noticed that’s keeping me from celebrating what I’ve already accomplished.

I’m guessing we all do this a lot. Life is incredibly fast paced. The next task is on the horizon. In addition, our society promotes a subtle version of “pride goeth before the fall”, encouraging us to move quietly forward from our deeds.

I believe it’s important to take time to bask in our achievements, whether we do that publicly or privately. Realizing how competent we are and luxuriating in that good feeling will serve to increase our confidence going forward. Confidence aside, pride in our accomplishments may also help us increase our level of self-love. Yeah, that sounds a little woo-woo, but if you stop and love yourself for a second or two, you’ll realize how good it feels.

So, let’s all just take a minute or two right now to celebrate whatever it is, big or small, that we’ve accomplished recently. Set aside the future for a moment. Realize that you are tough, capable, and competent in whatever realm is on your mind. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

We received about 1/4” rain yesterday, which is probably just enough to make Post muddy up high and slick down low. It’s raining right now, so cross Post off the list for today. Hospital and Syncline, perhaps, are better bets, and I bet the dirt will be amazing on the 44 Road this weekend. As for road biking, it’s raining, sillies. Maybe this afternoon.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events start with the 7am donut and coffee run at Kickstand Coffee. As the name implies, you get a free cup of coffee and a donut for jogging or walking 4 miles.

Tomorrow is the White Salmon Backyard Half Marathon on Hospital Hill, the A-Town Throwdown windsports event at Arlington, a shuttle day at Sandy Ridge to benefit Northwest Trails Alliance, the Summer Solstass 50k ultramarathon, and opening day of sailing season in Cascade Locks with free sailboat rides for the whole family. While you’re in Cascade Locks tomorrow, swing by the Renewal Workshop from 9 to 2 for a huge sale on refurbished high-tech outdoor gear. Looking at next weekend, Trout Lake has the Mt. Adams Country bike tour – get signed up now.

Have an awesome day today!
