Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s windy already this morning (it’s Friday), and models have upped the forecast from yesterday. We should have strong westerlies all day today followed by moderate westerlies on Saturday and lesser westerlies on Sunday. Sunday’s wind will be limited to the afternoon, and the good news is that the westerlies are likely to beat the model predictions. Next week: hot, but probably holding on to the moderate westerlies except on Wednesday. That’s subject to change, of course, as we’re a long ways out from next week!

Back to Friday, we have pressures of 30.05/29.93/29.91 to start the day for gradients of .12/.02. Westerlies are in the 24-27 range from Viento to The Hook with 10-13 east of Mosier and 7-10 near Stevenson. Models say we’ll see a quick build to 27-31 from Viento to Mosier this morning spreading to Doug’s this afternoon. Stevenson should rise to 22-26 and hold through the day. In the afternoon, the Maryhill stretch should pick up to 25-28 (although it’s been underperforming lately, so don’t bet on it), Arlington gets 20-23, and Threemile 17-20. River flow readings this morning are 155-164kcfs, and the flow should rise this afternoon. River temp: 70F. High temp forecast for Hood River is 80F and for Pasco 97F.

It’s worth noting that today’s setup is not your typical high-wind setup. There’s an upper level low sitting right off the mouth of the Columbia River. It’s contributing by sending plenty of cooler air into the west half of the region, especially this afternoon as the desert heats up to the upper 90’s. Thank the thermals today!

Saturday starts with deep marine clouds, perhaps 3500′ of them, as far east as Hood River. This shifts the wind eastward to start the day. Morning wind will be gusty 10-15 under the clouds west of Mosier with 17-20 from Mosier to Arlington. Keep your eyes on the western Gorge for the afternoon. Westerlies pick up to 20-24 from Stevenson to Hood River with just 11-14 from Mosier to Rufus. Why the big drop compared to Friday? Temps in the desert will be much cooler, so gradients will be lesser. High temp Saturday for Hood River: 80F.

Sunday starts off with light westerlies. Models suggest just 10-13 in the evening, but I suspect we’ll see more than that. Let’s look at the models again tomorrow. The forecast for Monday is currently 22-25 in the Corridor (Swell to Hood River). Hotter weather is forecast for the middle of next week, and it’s not yet totally clear what the wind will do. Models are currently hinting at holding on to the westerlies every day but the hottest day, Wednesday. Have a great weekend!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! The Perseid Meteor Shower peaks this week. Unfortunately, the moon also peaks this week. The Dufur Threshing Bee is this weekend. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

Some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
