Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Friday morning, and this will be the last forecast until next Saturday. I’m off on a retreat. Please don’t bother the nice lady staying at my house. She is not a forecaster and also would like to enjoy her stay without disruption! So… models have been bouncing around a lot on the timing of an incoming system which has led to wide swings in the predictions for today the last few mornings and also between morning and evening model runs. More consistency is seen over the next couple of days.

We initially had a forecast of Dawn Patrol for this morning. We do indeed have dawn patrol, but it’s easterlies instead of westerlies! You’ll find E15-20 at Viento for a few hours this morning. By early afternoon, we’ll be seeing 17-20 from Stevenson to Hood River with light east wind east of Hood River. The timing of an incoming low pressure system will determine what the wind does later today. If that system arrives early enough, westerlies will build to 23-26 from Hood River to Doug’s (gusty 16-20 west of Hood River). If the timing is just right, we could see gusty 24-28 from Stevenson to Rufus this evening. Arlington will be sitting right under the low and is unlikely to be windy. River flow readings this morning are 77-113kcfs, and the flow has consistently been around 180kcfs in the afternoon. River temp is 71F. High temp forecast is 98 for Hood River.

Westerlies build overnight as cool air surges in to the west side, that low pressure system sits in the Washington desert, and a front approaches offshore. That front is likely to disrupt the wind. Even so, models call for a big day: dawn patrol at 27-31 from Viento to Rufus. That said, clouds are forecast to push to Hood River, so Viento and Mosier will be ripping windy while Hood River proper may be very up-and-down to start. Models then increase gradients and hint at 30-34mph between Viento and The Dalles with 24-28 east of The Dalles to Arlington or Threemile. Frontal systems tend to disrupt the wind between Viento and Mosier, so don’t be surprised if the wind is less than predicted near Swell, but there should still be at least a couple hours of strong wind. Jump on it! Stevenson, once the clouds burn off, should be in the mid to upper 20’s. The eastern WA low pressure system is forecast to move into Idaho in the afternoon. This lessens gradients. Westerlies fall to 25-28 from Mosier to Threemile with 19-23 west of Mosier. High temp: blissfully low at 78F

Sunday starts with 11-14 all through the Gorge, all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. The focus then shifts to the western Gorge: 17-21 from Stevenson to The Dalles midday with 21-24 from Mosier to Avery in the afternoon. Rufus joins with 14-17. High temp: 85F. Models hint at 13-16 on Monday (but maybe less) and easterlies at 20-30mph on Tuesday. Models suggest a 10-15 degree temp drop between Tuesday and Wednesday, and the sounding models brings in strong NW upper-level wind. Keep an eye on that one for a good day on the river. And let’s see how this long-range forecast holds. The usual answer is … “poorly”. I’ll see y’all next Saturday. Have a great week!

Cycling

As of Monday, 8/17, the following trails are closed due to fire danger: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and andy lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.

Other news: some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
