Random Morning Thoughts

One of the things we do as we get older is get set in our perceptions of self. We come up with ideas: “I am a person who (fill in the blank).” For example, we might think, “I am a person who doesn’t like conflict,” or “I am a person gets stressed out by other drivers.” The more we tell ourselves the ideas, the more we harden our sense of self and the more rigid we become.

Secret: all those things we know about our “self” can change. Don’t believe me? Think about exceptions to the boxes you’ve created for yourself. Was there ever a time when you weren’t “that way”, whatever way that is? Uh-huh. I thought so. Also, we can change.

We change by trying different things and noticing the result. Maybe we engage in a conversation rather than avoiding a conflict and notice that it’s actually not all that scary. Maybe we drive and send well-wishes at the other drivers and notice that we’re not as stressed. By doing this, we harness the neuroplasticity of our brain to create a new reality, a new “self”. If you look at the bigger picture here, you may notice that the ability for change calls into question the idea of the existence of a fixed “self”. But that’s a story for another day. May you be open to experience. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.
