Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Friday’s starting out snowy on Mt. Hood. Models have backed off on the daytime snowfall predictions. For the weekend, it appears we’ll see warmer temps Saturday. The day will be mostly dry and then will shift to light rain followed by heavy snow. Sunday looks to be snowy all day long. If the predictions hold, the mountain should pick up 12-18” of snow by the end of the weekend.

For Friday, light snowfall in the morning gives way to clouds in the afternoon and evening. The snow level will be 3500′ early, rising to 6000′ overnight. Precip: 0.1-0.2” water value (WV) during the day, for 1-2” of new snow. No accumulation overnight. Wind will be SW 35 early falling to SW 15-20 in the afternoon and staying that way overnight.

Saturday starts off clear, turns cloudy by mid-morning, sees a bit of rain in the afternoon, and then sees a strong cold front overnight. That system will likely start as a snow-rain mix and transition quickly to snow. The snow level will be 6000′ early, 4000′ around 10pm, and 1000-1500′ after midnight. Precip: a trace of rain in the afternoon. 1.0” WV overnight, for perhaps 1/4” rain and 6-8” of new snow. Wind will be S 15-20 early, SSW 30 in the afternoon and evening, and a blistering W 55 after midnight. That will affect the snow quality for Sunday morning, and it’s also likely there will be icing issues due to the rainy start to the storm.

Sunday looks awesome once the wind backs off. Cold temps, lots of new snow, and lots more falling during the day. Powder day, for sure. Snow level 1000′-1500′ all day long. Daytime snowfall: 0.6” WV for 6-7” of powder. Overnight snowfall: 0.4” WV, for 4-5” of powder. Wind: W 55 early, quickly fading to SW 15-20 by 10am, holding through the evening, and becoming W 35 overnight.

There’s model disagreement after Sunday, but it does appear that the general picture is warmer and wet for 24-48 hours. Get your riding in over the weekend!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Variable wind on Friday morning gives way to light westerlies at 5mph or so on Friday afternoon. River flow is 79,800cfs and temp is 42 degrees. Saturday looks like E 30-35 near Rooster and E 25-30 near Stevenson. The wind will go up and down during the day as a low pressure system approaches the coast. That system moves inland overnight giving us westerlies at 30-40mph between 11pm Saturday and 4am Sunday. During the day Sunday, we’ll start with W 13-16 in the west and 20-26 in the east. The wind will back off to W 10-13 everywhere in the afternoon.

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: now on vacation for the fall and winter. Will return in spring.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s muddy out there on the trails. Riding them will damage them. Please don’t. Remember, if you damage the trails, volunteers have to spend timing fixing them rather than building new trails. There are lots of other options: gravel grinding, road biking, trainer biking. Don’t knock ’em ’til you try ’em!

Upcoming Events

At 7am on Friday, there’s the Kickstand Coffee Run, where jogging or walking 4 miles gets you a free cup of coffee and a donut. There’s a by-donation yoga class at Yoga Samadhi at 4:15 on Friday afternoons.
