Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s Thursday morning, and it’s a drizzly one on the slopes of Mt. Hood. The drizzle transitions to partly cloudy sky this afternoon and mixed-precip-to-snow overnight. We’ll then see colder weather with snow for the next three days followed by an uncertain forecast for Sunday.

Thursday’s details: Light rain in the morning, partly cloudy sky in the afternoon, mixed precip around midnight, and snow in the wee hours of Friday. Snow level: 8000′ early, 7000′ in the afternoon, 5500′ around midnight, and 3000′ after midnight. Precip: a trace or so during the day. 0.2” water value (WV) that falls as a rain/snow mix overnight, for up to an inch of new snow. Wind will be WSW 30 during the day and SW 30-40 overnight.

Friday sees snow for most of the day with partly cloudy to clear sky from mid-afternoon on. The snow level will be 3000′ all day. Precip: 0.4” WV during the day, for 4” or so of regular old Cascade snow. Wind will be SW 35 early, SW 20 in the afternoon, and S 15 overnight.

If you’re choosing your weekend day, you’ll have to choose without complete information. Models are not agreeing on the weather on Sunday, or at least not on the details of the weather. Saturday starts off clear and turns snowy midday. Depending on the exact storm track, there may be a period of mixed precip, rain, or snain mid-afternoon, but it’ll be back to snow overnight. The snow level will be 3000′ early, 1500′ mid-morning, 5000’+ in the afternoon, 1500′ in the evening, and 1000′ after midnight. Precip: 0.1” WV from 1pm to 4pm – probably mixed precip. An additional 0.5” WV falls overnight, for 3-5” of increasingly dry, fluffy snow. Wind will be S 20 early, SW 15-25 during the day, and W 30 after midnight.

As I said before, the details are unclear for Sunday. The GFS brings a compact low through the area, for strong wind and heavy precip Sunday afternoon. The Euro has a broad area of low pressure on track that’s different enough to affect the reliability of any precip and wind forecast. Let’s see if they come into agreement tomorrow, okay?

Road and Mountain Biking

*FREEZE THAW ALERT* We’re in a pattern of overnight freezing temps with daytime temps above freezing. This means the soil structure on the trails will liquefy. If you ride them, you will do major damage. Please don’t. Or, if you must ride, only do so under the forest canopy where the trails will not thaw. Or ride your road bike, gravel roads, or the trainer!
