Gorge Wind Forecast

Yesterday’s weather system did a bit of a number on yesterday’s wind quality, but hopefully you still got out on the water and had some playtime. For today, we’ll have a trough of low pressure shifting eastward and high pressure building inland. Gradients at 6am were down to .05 (pdx-dls) and .01 (dls-psc) with river flow at 106kcfs and river temp at 70 degrees. There are no clouds in Portland, and the high pressure is predicted to strengthen during the day. This won’t leave the Gorge wind machine with much to work with; we’ll see west 5-8 or so for much of the day with a period of west 10-14 after 2pm between Cascade Locks and Hood River.

Saturday starts off with basically no wind at all. As a thermal low builds over the Willamette Valley, the wind will pick up to E 15-20 near Rooster Rock with 10-15 near Stevenson. That should happen mid to late morning. Other Gorge locations will see calm wind early and light easterlies in the afternoon.

Sunday starts off with east wind at 25-30 near Rooster Rock and 20-25 near Stevenson. We’ll have a few hours of these stronger winds before the speeds start to drop. By 2pm, the wind will be back down under 10mph at Rooster and Stevenson. The rest of the Gorge will see, at most, very light east wind on Sunday. You can also expect some wildfire smoke.

Looking ahead to Monday, there won’t be any wind at all, anywhere. As of right now, models suggest the west wind will return at 20-23 on Tuesday. It’s probably worth holding that lightly, as models tend to break down high pressure systems and heat waves more quickly than the eventuality.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was at my therapist’s yesterday, and we were playing around with the seating arrangement. At first, we sat on the floor, with him to my left. I felt solid and secure and grounded. He moved to the other side, and immediately I felt young and afraid and tearful. This happened within the course of 60 seconds.

We like to think that we are complete, unchanging, solid human beings who must stay true to who we are. But this simply isn’t the way we work. In different situations, in different relationships, we become different people.

We strive to be “who we are”, and we berate ourselves when we are not. But there is no consistent “I”; rather, we change from minute to minute, day to day, and context to context. While we can strive to always operate according to certain moral and interpersonal ideals, we won’t always do so in the same way. And neither will anyone else!

When we understand this, we can go easier on ourselves and others. Instead of striving for behavioral consistency, we can reach for moral consistency or relationally-based consistency, or some other model. But we will not be the same from moment to moment. That’s just not how we are wired, and that’s part of what makes being human so delightful. Enjoy yourself. You’re endlessly fascinating. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Also currently closed: Dethman Ridge Road at Odell Creek and Highway 30 at Chenoweth Bridge. The second one has a bypass for bikes and pedestrians in place along The Dalles waterfront trail.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
