Gorge Wind Forecast

Today’s A With the west coast under a blocking pattern and a low dropping in over interior BC the next couple of days, we’re in a fine setup for strong westerlies. A reminder that the AWSI trade show opens to the public at the Event Site after noon today. That said, exhibitors are also going to be in the process of take-down at that time, so it’s unclear what that will look like. Back to the weather…

For Friday, marine clouds are forecast to stick around in the metro area for at least half the day, giving the Gorge a jump on heating. Strong offshore high pressure adds push from the synoptic scale. With pre-dawn gradients at .14 and .06, we’re looking at a rowdy day on the river. Expect dawn patrol at 26-29 near Viento, Mosier and Rufus. Launches between those locations will generally start the day at 20-24, with the exception of cloudy Stevenson (13-16) and Roosevelt (13-16). By late morning, we should have 26-29 from Viento to Rufus, and that wind should stick around through the day. Periods of 30-33 are possible near Mosier this morning and Doug’s this afternoon. Stevenson and Roosevelt will max out around 23-26. River flow is 103kcfs and temp is 70 degrees.

On to Saturday: the metro area stays buried in clouds all day, but the Gorge frees itself from the marine layer by late morning. Dawn Patrol will be 23-26 from Viento to Moiser with Swell likely to have lesser wind. Wait for those clouds to clear before you jump on it, or head a bit east for the sunshine. Max wind Saturday will be 27-31+ from Viento to Rufus, filling in to Roosevelt in the afternoon. Stevenson may stay in the clouds all day; in that case, the wind maxes out at 16-19 there. It’s likely the Gorge Paddle Challenge downwinder will take place Saturday. Watch out for hundreds of “downwind floating objects” headed from the western reaches of the river to Hood River.

On to Sunday: morning clouds burn off a little earlier, but dropping offshore pressure will make for a lesser day. Morning wind looks like 14-17 from Hood River to The Dalles. Afternoon westerlies pick up to 24-27 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Monday looks like 15-18.

Road and Mountain Biking

Industrial Fire Level is now Level III. Moto is no longer allowed on trails or unimproved roads, including in Post Canyon. Kreps land and SDS lands will close within the next couple of weeks due to fire danger – date is not yet set. Riorden Hill Road is closed between the end of the pavement and Family Man. Family Man is also closed, as is access to it, meaning you will need to choose other routes to Upper Post. Red Hill Road is theoretically closed to cars due to logging. Folks have ridden it on bikes on the weekend, but ride at your own risk. Chip sealing will happen on Highway 30 between Mosier and Rowena Crest August 12-14.

All local trails are open – I received confirmation of Huffman Peak too. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.
