Friday. Hot. Damn hot. With a side of unicorns and rainbows.

We do have a little westerly gradient this morning, but models say it’s going bye-bye. Let’s go with light westerlies early and glassy conditions after mid-morning. Tomorrow looks light and variable too. Break out the SUP boards and the kayaks! Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

A marine push on Sunday morning will shake things up, but southerly flow and possible convection will throw a monkey wrench into the forecast machine. Expect W 15-18 to start the day Sunday with W 30+ in the afternoon from Stevenson to Rufus with a touch less at Arlington. No, serious. The models are showing nutso wind on Sunday afternoon, assuming thunderstorms don’t kill it. It definitely looks windy enough for Pepi’s unicorns (large breaking waves) to make an appearance.

Plan to move quickly, because part of the drive for this is an approaching shortwave, and that tends to make the wind blow for a couple hours everywhere followed by a drop everywhere but Stevenson, Avery and Arlington.

Monday and Tuesday also look windy, with mid 20’s or better.

Jones and Sauvie’s Beta Test Forecast: Jones today: 20-23. Jones tomorrow: 16-19. Jones Sunday: No wind. Sauvie’s today: 16-19+ pm. Sauvie’s tomorrow: 15-18 all day. Sauvie’s Sunday: No wind.

Coast forecast (north/central/south). Today: 20-25/25-30/20, W 6′ @ 10 seconds. Tomorrow: 10-15/light/light, W 7 @ 9. Sunday: Light everywhere, NW 5 @ 8.

Nothing to say here today.

Random Morning Thoughts

When the holidays roll around, I’m stoked that I don’t feel an obligation to purchase presents. You see, I believe that gifts are material manifestations of the affection we feel for other people. Gifts are best when they are spontaneous – that way they carry true affection and no resentment.

But gifts, much like the scent of baking cookies, are ephemeral. Chocolate bars melt into our taste buds, diamonds fall from our ears while we ride our bikes, and coffee mugs, crafted from powdered unicorn horns and light beams reflected from rainbows, shatter when dropped.

Gifts are not about the object. They’re about the associated emotions and relationships. They let us know we’re a part of the interconnected web of humanity. Next time you receive a gift, stop for a moment and mull over what the gift says about your relationship with the giver and about your relationship about the world around you. Burn that knowledge into your mind.

That way, when the chocolate bar melts all over your dashboard, your diamond ends up in the dirt on Seven Streams, or you leave that coffee mug on the roof of your car and drive off while people holler at you, you’ll still know you’re loved.

Gorge Weather Forecast

The forecast today, as they say in the movies, is “Hot, damn hot”. Get your windows and doors open and take advantage of nature’s mid-60’s air conditioning this morning, and slam those doors shut by mid-morning. The forecast today is 101, and so is today’s record high. No wind. No rainbows.

Don’t expect a lot of relief tonight – the temps will drop into the upper 60’s or low 70’s and rise back to 103 tomorrow. Watch out for falling records tomorrow: the previous high on June 27th in Hood River was 96 degrees. On top of the heat, it’ll be muggy by tomorrow afternoon, but hey, that’ll leave us with a chance for thunderstorms, convective debris, and a beautiful sunset. No wind, 1% chance of rainbows.

Thunderstorm chances continue on Sunday, leaving us warm and muggy with temps in the low 70’s to start the day. Expect mid 90’s in the afternoon with nuking west wind. Or thunderstorms. Rainbow chances are 4%. Unicorn chances: 87%.

Road and Mountain Biking

Tomorrow is the Portland Naked Bike Ride, where 12,000 people get naked and ride through the city. It’s going to be the Best Naked Bike Ride Ever, because it’ll be super warm. In other words, you will not freeze your nuts or tits off this year. There are plenty of other Pedalpalooza events going on if you would prefer to join fun group rides while wearing clothes.

See you soon!

Upcoming Events

If you’re looking for ways to cool down today, there are two evening events on the water. There’s the CGWA Beach Bash concert at Hood River’s Waterfront Park from 6 to 10. Oregon State Parks has a campfire song circle, probably minus the campfire given the fire danger, at Rooster Rock from 7 to 9 tonight. I think this is a particularly sweet idea, and will let you know when the other campfire song circles happen.

Coming up tomorrow, the CGWA beach bash continues at the Event Site with SUP demos and lots of activities for kids. Tomorrow’s the Mt. Adams Country Bike Tour, the Hood River Saddle Club Trail Challenge, a work party on the 191 trail in Post Canyon, a trail run at 8 in Post Canyon and a women’s bike ride leaving Mountain View Cycles at 9. Tomorrow night in Portland is the Portland Naked Bike Ride. There’s a swap meet at Luhr Jensen on Sunday followed by a BBQ at Northwave from 11 to 1.

Windance has a kite demo at Ft. Stevens on Saturday and Sunday.

One last thing this weekend: we’re looking at a good chance for thunderclouds and convective debris, so keep your camera handy for some pretty sunrises and sunsets!

Have an awesome day today!
