Friday. Hi holiday weekend. Welcome!

DSC_0047
It’s another cloudy light wind morning here in the Gorge, and the fishing boats are surely happy about that. We had 17782 Chinook make it past Bonneville yesterday along with 2006 Steelhead. That means there’s plenty of fresh and delicious fish at my friend Doug’s fish stand in the Windance parking lot. Head over, especially during the afternoon, for samples of bellies and wings hot off the smoker. And fish. Buy fish, because it’s good for you. Now, back to the wind forecast, we started off with itty-bitty gradients of .03 and .03 with westerlies generally in the single digits with teens and sprinkles at Swell. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

As an upper level low moves into eastern Washington today, we’ll see the wind pick up a bit, assuming that low doesn’t fire off any thunder. Expect a slow build in the wind field today to a max of gusty 20-23 from Mosier to Rufus, maybe at Arlington too, this afternoon. Steven’s Locks is a tricky call today, as it will likely be in the sprinkles. Let’s call it a max of 10-13 this afternoon.

Saturday sees another round of deep clouds to the west with a weak weather disturbance moving through during the day. The wind will start off with west 7-10 pretty much everywhere. In the afternoon, we’ll see the wind pick up to 21-24 from Stevenson (maybe?) to The Dalles, with Rufus possibly joining in as well.

Sunday looks a bit more stable than Friday and Saturday. Can you really blame those days? They are party nights after all, and contribute to the instability around us. Anyway… expect 17-20 to start the day on Sunday, probably from Swell to Rufus, but maybe in some other more concentrated area. By the afternoon, we should have 24-28 pretty much everywhere that’s not completely socked in with clouds, so probably from Viento to Arlington.

Monday currently looks like 7-10 to start with 14-17 in the afternoon. That’s perfect for the Roy Webster Cross-Channel Swim, and also for fishing. Remember, there’s fresh fish at Windance.

Random Morning Thoughts

My friend’s illuminating Tuesday night talk is still on my mind. He said another thing that struck me – while you’re meditating, your mind will keep wandering off in search of peace and entertainment. That search is false. If you cannot find peace in the object of your meditation, you’re not going to find it anywhere else. After all, anything anywhere else is fleeting, impermanent.

Our larger life mirrors a meditation practice, but it’s ever-so much more complicated. In any given moment, we have the opportunity to chase after any number of pains, pleasures, experiences, people, thoughts, dollars, desires… We do this in the hope of experiencing some sort of pleasurable response.

Chasing pleasure doesn’t work long-term. The only thing that works long-term is cultivating peace, ease, self-acceptance and equanimity from the inside. External pleasure is no different than the buzz of a glass of wine, the high from your drug of choice, a colorful sunrise, the warm haze of new-found love: fleeting. Ephemeral. Impermanent. Internal peace, developed over time, is stable, solid, and unlike the outside world, under our own control.

The outside world is a beautiful place. Cultivate your inner gardens to match, and you’ll have the mind you’ve always wanted. Have an awesome day.
