Thursday. It’s September. Where the **** did summer go?

2015-11-15 15-08-47 (C)-Edit
While the cloudy, cooler weather may be nice for certain things, it does make forecasting the wind a bit tricky. So let’s just start with the morning facts: .06 (pdx-dls), .03 (dls-psc), 71 degree river, 69.4kcfs, 973 Steelhead and (holy moly) 21169 Chinook cruising past Bonneville. Early morning wind was in the single digits to teens pretty much everywhere. Continued after the chart…

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

With clouds already present and a weather system moving in this afternoon, the near and far east will likely be better bets today than the western Gorge. So, expect the wind to build to gusty 15-18 from Stevenson to The Dalles by noon. When the rain hits the western Gorge, the wind will die off, so be prepared for that. East of the low clouds, so probably from Rowena eastward, we’ll see gusty 23-26 this afternoon.

Friday sees showers in the western Gorge all day with another, stronger afternoon system. That, once again, will push the strongest, steadiest wind east of Hood River. Expect light west wind in the morning, building to 13-16 east of Mosier by noon or so. Later in the afternoon, we should see 20-23 from Rowena to Arlington. The cloudy western Gorge will max out at gusty 12-15 on Friday.

Saturday sees weak high pressure and less clouds in the central Gorge, but there’s not all that much wind in the forecast. We’ll have 7-10 out of the west in the morning with 17-20 from Stevenson to The Dalles in the afternoon. Sunday starts off with 17-20 and builds to 25-29. Monday currently looks light in the morning with 13-16 in the afternoon, but that’s a long ways out and subject to change.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was at this talk Tuesday night, and the lovely human being giving the talk mentioned something intriguing at one point. He said we all think we are good people, but that many of us don’t actually do the things that good people do. As an example, he talked about the choice we make in a fight to say the thing we know will be hurtful. Good people control themselves and don’t say that hurtful thing, while people with more work to do will say that nasty thing and apologize later (or not apologize at all).

Part of becoming a better person is taking a hard look at who you are right now. We all think we are good people, but I can assure you that we can think that without being that. This certainly was my world for many years – I was dedicated to being a good person, I thought of myself as a good person, but there were times when I was unable to control my actions and said and did hurtful things. Not controlling our actions is no excuse – within each of us lies the ability to control our behavior.

Realizing that you impact others negatively is a profoundly painful, sad, heart-wrenching experience. From this pain, you can take heart: being able to feel that pain is a sign that you are actually a good human being with the ability to change.

So, be brave. Look closely at yourself and ask yourself what actions you take, even small things, that hurt the people around you. It’ll hurt to turn the magnifying glass on yourself, but the joyful, self-acceptance will be worth it, I promise. When you see how you’re hurting others, take steps to change those little things. There’s enough suffering in the world already. Let’s do what we can to change that, starting with ourselves. Let’s be better people. Have an awesome day.
