Mt. Hood Forecast

Sunshine on the slopes today gives way to a bit of snow on Saturday and then sunshine for the extended forecast period. For today, Friday, expect sun until late tonight when light snow arrives. The freezing level will be 0′ this morning, 4000′ this afternoon, and will fall to about 1000′ overnight. About 0.1” water equivalent (WE) is forecast overnight, for 1” new snow. Wind: SW 5-10 in the morning, W 25-30 in the afternoon, and W 45-50 after midnight.

Saturday starts windy and snowy. By afternoon, the sky will be mostly cloudy with flurries, and clear sky will return late evening. The snow level will be 500-1000′ in the morning, 1500′ in the evening, and the freezing level will be back to 0′ under clear sky overnight. About 0.2” WE is forecast, for a couple inches of light, dry snow. Wind: W 45-50 early, WNW 20-30 in the afternoon, and NE 10 overnight.

Sunday looks clear and sunny all day. The freezing level will be 0′ in the morning and 3500′ in the afternoon. No precip. Wind: NE 10-15 early, E 5-10 in the afternoon, and E 15-20 overnight. Monday also looks sunny with the freezing level at 3000′ in the morning and 4500′ later with N/NE wind at 15. Sunshine continues for at least the next week. Enjoy!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

A couple more days of westerlies are in the forecast before a likely switch to easterlies for several days. This morning (it’s Friday! TGIF) starts with light and variable wind. A front approaching from the NW combines with offshore high pressure at 1032mb to drive the westerlies into the “go” zone by late morning. The wind picks up to gusty 22-25 from Stevenson to Doug’s by late morning with 10-13 in the eastern Gorge. The approaching front knocks the western Gorge wind to gusty 16-29 in the afternoon and nudges Avery to Arlington to gusty 24-28. River flow is 162kcfs, river temp is 47F, and high temp forecast is 58F.

Saturday starts with drizzle in the western Gorge and another round of westerlies in the hopper. Early wind will be gusty 18-22 from Stevenson to Rufus with gusty 13-16 east of there. It’ll take a few hours for the wind to steady out thanks to very chilly morning temps (37F); afternoon wind rises to gusty 25-29 from Lyle to Boardman with gusty 10-14 under the clouds in the west. High temp: 49F.

Sunday maintains the offshore high pressure, but models predict easterlies. Let’s go with light easterlies for now and see if that changes in tomorrow’s forecast. While the 12k model predicts easterlies for the next several days, synoptic scale patterns hint that the model could be off. Let’s wait and see, shall we? Have fun in the westerlies the next couple of days!

Coast, Jones, Sauvie’s
