Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s an easterly day in the Gorge, and that will be followed by a couple of gusty westerly days before we head into another cycle of rain. So, let’s look at this sunny Friday. To start the day, we have E 30-35 at Rooster, 20-25 at Stevenson, and 15-20 at Viento. We should see the wind pick up to 25-30 at Stevenson and (perhaps) 20-25 at Viento. Don’t expect much east of Swell. Perhaps 5mph max. Those easterlies hold through 1pm or so and then fade by 5-10mph. River flow is 94,200cfs, river temp is 64F, and high temp forecast is 82F.

Saturday will be another sunny day, but the wind will turn westerly. The day starts with W 8-11. By mid-morning, we’ll have 13-16 from Stevenson to Mosier with 8-11 to the east. It does appear the wind will get gustier and just a touch stronger in the late afternoon: gusty 15-18 from Stevenson to Avery with 10-13 in the eastern Gorge. High temp: 83F.

Moving on to Sunday. We have a cold front approaching from offshore. It’s a solid one, and will have detrimental effects on wind quality. The day starts with gusty 15-18 from Stevenson to Mosier (maybe significantly more at Viento) with 7-10 near Rowena and 13-16 in the eastern Gorge. In the afternoon, as the front draws near, we’ll see gusty 17-22 from Stevenson to Arlington minus the Rowena stretch of river. Pick somewhere else for best results.

Looking at the start of next week, we have rain. Yay! It starts late Sunday and continues intermittently through Tuesday. That, of course, will make the wind gusty and unreliable. That said, it will be westerly, and you will be free to chase it around. Enjoy!

Cycling

Local landowners plan to reopen lands when IFPL drops to 1. Do not access SDS, Kreps, or other private lands until told they are open – we are still in fire season, and those lands are still closed to public access. Dirt Surfer bridge has been replaced and the trail is open again.

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users. DNR land (Buck Creek / Nestor Peak) has reopened. Columbia Hills is closed to fire danger.

Open trails: Post, Falls Creek, Lewis River, Sandy Ridge, Gorge 400, Plains of Abraham / Ape Canyon. 44 Road: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks Meadows, 450 to the top, Gunsight, Underhill. Siouxon has reopened, but it is burned and heartbreaking according to trip reports.
