Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

The day of reckoning has arrived, and many locations on the water are already windy. It’s going to be a big day, and you should get it for all its worth! Saturday will also be plenty windy, but you’ll be headed east of The Dalles for the bigger readings. Sunday is looking maybe, just barely, only perhaps windy enough to get you on the river. We then switch to light easterlies Monday, stronger easterlies Tuesday, and return to west wind on Wednesday. It’ll be hot Monday through Wednesday, and perhaps Thursday.

So, Friday morning. Pressures at 6am were 30.04/29.92/29.85 for gradients of 0.12 and 0.07. Know what that means? You can go pretty much anywhere you want to find wind! Considering heading to the far eastern Gorge? Consider camping. You’ll be perfectly situated to catch tomorrow’s wind. Back to today… morning wind will quickly rise to 25-28 from Viento to Swell. Hood River and Mosier won’t take long to join in the mid-upper 20’s. East of there: teens to start. By early afternoon, we’ll have 27-31 from Viento to Rufus. Marine air starts to surge back into the western half of the state early today. This could knock the wind down into the gusty 20-26 range west of Moiser late afternoon, but it’s a little unclear. Don’t be surprised to see the wind drop! Anyway, the marine surge will drive the temp gradient and wind higher. Expect 27-33 between Hood River or Mosier and Threemile this afternoon. You’ll notice I didn’t mention Stevenson yet. That’s because it’s expected to stay cloudy much of the day making for a tricky forecast. Best guess is gusty upper teens to low 20’s. River flow readings are 121-161kcfs, river temp is 71F, and high temp forecasts are 79 (Hood River) and 90F (Arlington).

Deep marine clouds surge into the west side late Friday into Saturday morning. Those clouds could push all the way to The Dalles and could set off some showers Saturday morning as far east as Hood River. Result for the wind: it’ll be stronger and steadier east of The Dalles. Expect gusty 16-19 under the clouds with 24-27 from The Dalles to Boardman to start the day. Models indicate the wind will hold just like that all day long. High temp: 71F in Hood River, 76F in Arlington. Bring a hoodie! Also worth noting – Saturday is waterman Dan Gavere’s annual yard sale. Lots of wind and water sport gear will be available. 1704 Orchard Road, 9am-1pm.

High pressure starts to build inland on Sunday. That knocks down the gradients. The current forecast is 12-15 from Stevenson to Hood River to start, 7-10 midday, and perhaps 11-14 in the evening. Monday and Tuesday bring easterlies. It probably won’t be enough to get on the river on Monday, but perhaps Tuesday? Westerlies are forecast to return on Wednesday. No promises. Have a great day today, and be safe out there! Also… I still have the helmet I found floating in the Columbia near the White Salmon Bridge on Monday. I would like to get it back to the owner!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – On vacation until next fall

Hood River Weather Forecast

Clear sky this morning turns cloudy after 5pm thanks to a marine push. Temps will be in the upper 60’s early and upper 70’s later. Open windows all day? Very strong westerlies. No rainbows. Drizzle is possible under cloudy sky to start Saturday. The day ends sunny. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early (nice!) and low 70’s later (spectacular!). Moderate westerlies. 14% chance of rainbows. Sunday will be sunny. Temps start in the low 50’s (aaaaah!) and end in the mid 70’s (also aaaaaah!). Light to moderate westerlies. No rainbows.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

As of Monday, 8/17, the following trails are closed due to fire danger: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and andy lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.

Other news: some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
