Gorge Wind Forecast

It seems like a solid start to the day today with marine clouds in the western Gorge and clear sky above Hood River. The tricky piece of the forecast today is a trough of low pressure that approaches in the afternoon, messing with the wind field. That’ll do a couple of things: it’ll make the wind less consistent (more rangy) and it’ll spread the wind all the way to the eastern Gorge.

So, for Friday morning, you can expect the wind to build to 21-25 between Viento and Mosier by mid to late morning. Other locations (minus the Roosevelt area) will be in the 12-15 range or so. As this system approaches early in the afternoon, the wind will build to gusty 25-29 between Cascade Locks and Rufus. Generally speaking, this is a setup that favors Stevenson, Hood River and Avery for the long-lasting and most consistent wind. Other areas should see an hour or two of strong wind before a fade to gustier, lighter conditions. It also looks like Arlington and Roosevelt will join in today with a late afternoon push of 22-25.

We’ll have more clouds to the west on Saturday morning. We might even see a few marine clouds in Hood River to start the day. Wherever the clouds end up, we’ll have 21-24 just east of them for Dawn Patrol, probably from Hood River to Mosier. Areas under the clouds, likely Cascade Locks to Viento, will see 11-15 to start the day. As the day goes on, the wind will build to 24-27 from Swell to The Dalles, picking up into the 24-27 range near Cascade Locks as the clouds burn off.

Upper flow turns more northerly on Sunday, reducing the marine layer and increasing temps just a bit. Models don’t handle this scenario all that well; they tend to underestimate the wind. So, I’m thinking we’ll see 10-13 Sunday morning and 17-20 Sunday afternoon. The GFS is currently predicting light offshore wind on Monday. Much like the Sunday forecast, the GFS is probably underestimating the power of the offshore high. I suspect we’ll see light wind on Monday morning with westerlies at 10-13 or so Monday afternoon.

One thing about this weekend: I have a training in Portland all weekend which runs for 13 hours on Saturday and starts at 8am on Sunday. It’s going to be pretty tricky for me to get a forecast out under those conditions. I’ll do my best. My apologies if I can’t.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was talking about thoughts with one of my peers a while back as we were watching a counseling session. The client and therapist were talking about thought substitution – noticing a critical thought and immediately thinking a more positive thought to replace it. While this can work, it ignores the fundamental relationship created by the paradigm of thought replacement: that paradigm associates the self with the thoughts and gives the thoughts power. It also creates desire to change the thoughts, thereby putting energy into resisting them.

I believe a second, and more powerful approach, is to change our relationship with our thoughts. If we can simply watch them, we can learn that they are separate from who we are as people. Understanding this begins with the realization that the stream of thoughts and images our mind creates is, most of the time, not under our control.

When we learn to watch this stream without creating stories about it, without having it create stories about us, it loses its power. We can then see a self-critical thought for what it is: a fabrication of the mind, not a reality about our soul.

Learning to do this takes time and energy, but it’s a more fundamental and freeing change than constantly monitoring and replacing those thoughts we do not like. All that said, understanding this on an intellectual level is only a step; learning this experientially is the way to achieve lasting insight and change. Watch your thoughts. See what they toss at you. Reflect – is that really you, or just some process akin to digestion, breathing or any of the other innumerable things our bodies do. Pretty awesome, huh? Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Road and Mountain Biking

Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and all other SDS and Kreps lands are closed from today on through the end of fire season. That’s when “significant rain” falls and the fire danger is considered over. Also currently closed: Dethman Ridge Road at Odell Creek and Highway 30 at Chenoweth Bridge. The second one has a bypass for bikes and pedestrians in place along The Dalles waterfront trail.

Upcoming Events

There are a lot of community events today: the Skamania County Fair and Timber Festival, the Festival of Wheels in Goldendale, the RS Aero sailboat races in Cascade Locks, and the St. Helens International Festival of Trails at Marble Mountain Snopark. This evening from 7 to 10, Kickstand Coffee hosts a fundraiser for the Slider Project. And dont’ forget that every Friday morning at 7am, Kickstand Coffee has the donut run, where jogging or walking four miles gets you a free cup of coffee and a donut.

The Oregon Bigfoot Festival is tomorrow in Troutdale, Hood River has the Columbia Gorge Paddle Challenge, and there’s a footrace at the Skamania County Fair in the morning. Tomorrow night’s outdoor movies are Pete’s Dragon at Jackson Park in Hood River and Guardians of the Galaxy at Sorosis Park in The Dalles. Goldendale has a pre-eclipse party on Sunday.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
