Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!
SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast
Hi friends! Not much happening out there the next few days, so this forecast is for Sunday-Monday. Tuesday brings a slight chance of strong-enough west wind, but not many ensemble members are on board. Easterlies may be strong enough Thursday and/or Friday – Thursday’s the most likely day of the bunch. Looking at the extended Gorge wind forecast, the most likely 20+ mph west wind possibility is next Saturday. Let’s see how that extended forecast plays out! Before I forget, happy Thanksgiving weekend to all you Canadians!
Sunday kicked off with light west gradients: 29.92/29.89/29.88. Models insist we’ll see east wind today after this light onshore start. Iwash/Rooster and Stevenson and perhaps Viento build to E 15-18mph for a few hours this morning before dropping below 10mph this afternoon. East of The Dalles, you’ll find NE wind at 10-15mph after noon. River flow over the last 24 hours was 64-98kcfs, river temp is 63.9F, and high temp forecast is 63F and partly cloudy.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast
Monday starts off calm or nearly so. Westerlies build to 11-14mph from Stevenson to the Hatch or Hood River in the afternoon. High temp: 65 degrees and mostly clear. Tuesday starts with light westerlies – under 10mph. Afternoon wind builds to 13-16mph from Stevenson to Hood River. Some members of the ensembles give us westerlies as strong as 20mph, so don’t write it off yet! Lesser west wind is forecast on Wednesday.
As a ridge of high pressure builds over the Northwest on Thursday, easterlies arrive. As of this morning (Sunday), Thursday’s forecast is E 25-30mph in the usual east wind spots. Friday may start out just as strong, but it’ll fade faster. A return to westerlies is possible Saturday as the ridge (possibly) breaks down; as of this morning, there’s no sign of nukage, but mid 20s are a possibility. We’ll keep an eye on it, won’t we? Good morning, neighbors! Once again, cloud cover protected us from the coldest possible temps. It’s Sunday, in case you were wondering. Cloud blankie abandons many of us Sunday night, but we’ll talk more about that in a bit. Upcoming this week: another round of dry, unseasonably warm weather. Next chance of rain arrives next weekend (low chance) or early the following week (moderate chance). October, in other words, will probably exit dry and behind schedule for the water year…
It’s Sunday, and we have interesting temps this morning: 29-31 in Trout Lake, 38 in Glenwood (must be cloudy there!), 30-37 in Parkdale, and 35 in Hood River near my garden. Partly cloudy sky sticks around today as temps warm up to 63 in Hood River, 64 in The Dalles, and a miserly 59 in Pasco. Wind peaks at E 15-20mph at Iwash (NOT a rooster) Rock, Stevenson, and Viento areas midday before fading to 10mph or less this afternoon. From The Dalles eastward (and N and S), you’ll find NE wind at 10-15mph from midday on.
Overnight into Monday, dewpoints (available moisture to make warm cloud blankies) fall to 21-33. Aloft at 850mb (approximately 5000′), temps fall to +2-3C. Nothing is likely right near the Nch’i Wana. Mid-level clouds are likely east of The Dalles. Away from the Nothing and low clouds (see image), pretty much everyone should fall to 36 degrees or less with possible frost. Glenwood: mid 20s. Rest of Monday: mostly clear and 67-72 degrees with 15mph west wind west of The Dalles in the afternoon.
Warmer, sunny weather is forecast on Wednesday: 70-75 degrees with light west wind. Once again, frost is possible early. Thursday: warm and sunny with easterlies at 20-30mph in the usual east wind spots. Friday: carbon copy of Thursday. There’s a slight chance of a little rain next weekend, and there’s a more likely chance of some rain to start the following week. That’s it for today (and tomorrow). Safe travels. -TATAS
