Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!
SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast
Hi friends! Another windy day is on tap today as a weather feature gives the Gorge a nudge. Westerlies of some sort continue through at least Sunday with the strongest days being today, Thursday, and definitely Saturday. Sunday doesn’t look great on the GFS, but in my mind, it looks likely to exceed model predictions.
Diving in to the deets… Tuesday started with pressures of 30.07/29.98/29.94 with a mixed bag o features offshore and a weak weather feature headed this way. That system will help marine clouds linger, which will help the wind! Early wind was 12-15mph most places with an early burst of 20mph at the Hatch. Mid-morning sees 18-21mph from Stevenson to Hood River with 20-23mph from Lyle to Rufus. Models suggest the Hatch will briefly rise to 20-23mph before dropping to gusty 17-20mph in the afternoon. By late morning, westerlies build to 24-27mph from Lyle to Arlington.
For the afternoon, you’ll find gusty 20-23mph from Stevenson to Hood River, 24-27mph from Mosier to Rowena, and 27-30mph from Avery to Arlington. After 5pm, speeds slip a few mph, but it’ll still be plenty windy pretty much everywhere to get almost all of you on the Nch’i Wana. River flow over the last 24 hours was 100-161kcfs, river temp is 71.2F (poor salmon), and high temp forecast is 79F in Hood River and mid 80s to low 90s in the desert.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast
Lesser wind is forecast on Wednesday as heating increases slightly across the region. Early wind will be just 10-13mph and just between Viento and the Hatchery. Midday: 15-18mph from Stevenson to Hood River. Afternoon: 18-21mph from Stevenson to Doug’s. High temp: 83F in Hood River.
Cooler air off the coast and an approaching weather system give Thursday’s wind a nudge upward. Early conditions will be 21-24mph from Stevenson to the Hatchery with 17-20mph from Hood River to Mosier and 10-13mph out into the desert. Midday wind builds to 22-25mph from Stevenson to Mosier with 14-17mph near Rowena. Afternoon westerlies turn quite gusty, but they build: 19-23mph from Stevenson to Mosier, 23-26mph from Lyle to Rufus, and 17-20mph near Arlington. Hold out until after 5pm for 23-26mph at Arlington. Highs: 83 in Hood River and 90 in the desert.
Hotter weather Friday suppresses the wind somewhat – we’ll probably see 17-20mph, strongest between Stevenson and Hood River. Much stronger wind is possible on Saturday, although models currently disagree on the exact strength and location. The overall setup looks quite promising for a big day. Sunday’s GFS isn’t very optimistic, but the setup is the type that tends to over-perform. Starting next week, models are hinting at the possibility of a couple lighter wind days, but there’s also quite a bit of uncertainty. So let’s leave it here for now. See you on the Nch’i Wana soon!

Good morning, neighbors! Another perfectly summer summer day is on tap today. Other than a few degrees plus/minus of heat, and a little more/less wind, similar weather sticks around through Friday. Weekend weather looks cooler with strong wind on Saturday and lesser wind on Sunday. Looking at next week, we have another warming trend, but models are far from certain how warm it will be.
Glenwood this morning and our friends around the world
It was middling warm in Glenwood this morning where everyone takes the Middle Way: they walk down the middle of the road, only eat the middle of pizzas, and only drink 2% milk. Elsewhere in the Gorge this morning, folks were right around 50 degrees away from the Nch’i Wana. Close to the river: 60-68 degrees, which TATAS thinks is TOO WARM TOO EARLY. Come Tuesday afternoon here in our neck of the woods, we’ll have partly cloudy sky west of Wyeth and clear sky to the east. A weak weather feature passing through contributes to the persistence of the clouds. Temps end up at 78 in Stevenson, 79 in Hood River, 84 in The Dalles, and 92 in Pasco. West wind eventually rises to 20-25mph between Stevenson and Hood River with 25-30mph between Mosier and Arlington.
Wednesday’s Gorge weather forecast
On Wednesday, the Gorge starts cloudy west of Hood River and clear to the east. Morning temps: 55-65 degrees, hopefully warm enough to keep the roads free of !CE. It’ll definitely be warm enough to keep the roads free of ice, snow, sleet, and black ice which is called “black ice” because if you look at it just the right way, you get sucked into a black hole and emerge in a dark chocolate factory. Pretty cool, huh? High temps Wednesday: 81/83/89/90. West wind will be 10mph west of Mosier in the morning with lighter wind to the east. Afternoon: 15-20mph between Stevenson and The Dalles with light wind to the east.
Thursday’s Gorge weather forecast
A weather system tries to sneak up on us on Thursday, but … poor weather systems… they don’t realize that there’s no more sneaking with all these satellites, buoys, and artificially intelligenated beings (are they beings? Are they conscious?) keeping watch. Weather systems, like us humans, are now under continual surveillance by Big Brother. Anyway, morning temps will be 50-60 degrees. Afternoon: 81/83/90/93. West wind persists. Morning wind will be 20-25mph between Stevenson and Mosier with 15-20mph near Rowena and 10-15mph east to the Arlington equilateral triangle. Afternoon wind: 20-25mph between Stevenson and Mosier with 25-30mph from Lyle to Rufus and 20mph at Arlington (but only after 5pm at Arlington).
Extended Gorge weather forecast
Friday looks warmer – 86-95 degrees – with lighter (15-20mph) west wind. Saturday will be cooler and windier. Temps range from 78 to 94, and westerlies build to 30mph pretty much all through the Gorge. Fire danger will be extreme that day, for sure. Sunday looks cool (almost as cool as TATAS, but not quite), but some of the details aren’t clear. It’ll probably be windy west of The Dalles. Beyond that, some sort of warming trend is forecast, but the details are about as clear as the air near Burns (AQI: 277) right now. Once again, let’s all send our love to all the folks who are evacuated and facing the potential loss of homes and livelihoods.
