Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!
SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast
Hi friends! West wind of varying strengths continues through Monday or Tuesday, after which easterlies are likely for a few days. Active weather during the westerlies means they’ll be gusty and tricky to predict. Fall does not bring the most accurate Gorge wind forecasts!
Friday started with pressures of 30.06/29.94/29.90 for gradients of 0.12/0.06. Overall picture contains high pressure offshore and low pressure in the desert to start the day, but an offshore low will develop this afternoon (not supportive) and the helpful desert low will exit to the east. Viento started very windy (29mph) but quickly dropped to 19mph. Locations between Viento and Arlington at 8am were all generally in the 14-17mph with Stevenson under 10mph. By late morning, we’ll have 17-20mph all the way from Stevenson to Arlington.
Locations east of The Dalles drop below 10mph after 2pm, while the Stevenson to Doug’s zone rises to 17-20mph. Avery is likely to join late afternoon. River flow over the last 24 hours was 61-94kcfs, river temp is 69.1F, and high temp forecast is 72F for Hood River with thickening high clouds as the day progresses.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast
Saturday brings a rather unhelpful setup: offshore low pressure and an approaching weather system. Despite the lackluster setup, we could see a short burst of gusty, strong wind late in the day. Saturday starts with 12-15mph from Stevenson to the Hatch with under 10mph everywhere else. Mid-morning wind rises to 17-20mph between Stevenson and Mosier.
Ahead of the incoming weather system late afternoon, it’s possible we’ll see a burst of strong westerlies, perhaps 25mph or so. If those happen, they’ll likely be after 5pm, very gusty, and will completely die once the rain arrives. Location of that stronger wind: just ahead of the incoming weather system – the wind will move rapidly from west to east and is, quite frankly, not guaranteed to 1) arrive before dark or 2) happen at all! On top of all that, cool temps aloft could fire off thunderstorms in the afternoon which would make the wind even more unreliable! High temp: 70 degrees in Hood River and 75 degrees in the desert.
Sunday looks a bit more reliable thanks to a more stable setup: northerly flow aloft, offshore high pressure, a slight onshore temp gradient. Morning wind will be 11-14mph from Stevenson to Doug’s with 20-23mph from Avery to Boardman. Westerlies build to 25-28mph between Avery and Boardman in the afternoon with gusty 15-18mph (more at Viento) between Stevenson and Doug’s. Highs range from 63 in Hood River to 67 in the desert.
Lighter wind is forecast on Monday: 15-18mph between Stevenson and Hood River with 11-14mph near Rowena and under 10mph in the desert. High temps: 72-75 degrees. Models aren’t quite sure what will happen on Tuesday – the outcome depends on the placement of a high pressure ridge. Euro ensembles are pretty sure we’ll have easterlies. GFS deterministic wants to gift us westerlies at 21-24mph between Stevenson and Mosier. Don’t make plans yet – there’s too much uncertainty. Starting Wednesday, we’re almost certain to end up in a moderate (20-25mph) east wind pattern for a few days as high pressure and warmer, sunny weather takes hold. Good morning, neighbors! Quiet weather is planned today – perfect for you to rescue tomatoes and chanterelles prior to the rain arriving Saturday evening. Cool temps continue into Monday, and then we’re back to warm, sunny weather through next Friday. After that: too much uncertainty to forecast.
This morning in Glenwood, temps dropped to 38 degrees. That’s chilly! Chilly enough to make chili for dinner, but not cold enough to use questionable super-cheap Tr*mp beef that may contain banned antibiotics and other substances not fit for human or animal consumption. Make your chili using locally-grown beef – there’s plenty to be had!
Cool temps today make it a great day to open up the windows and do some cooking. Highs land at 70 in Stevenson, 72 in Hood River, 76 in The Dalles, and 77 in Pasco. High clouds increase during the day and knock down the UV index. In other words, it might get cloudy enough for shady gardening! Wind today will be out of the west. Morning: 15-20mph between Viento and Arlington. Afternoon: 15-20mph between Stevenson and Avery with under 10mph to the east.
Mother Nature is planning a visit on Saturday evening in the form of rain. This gives us a mostly cloudy start west of The Dalles with high clouds and filtered sun to the east. Morning temps: +/- 50 degrees. Clouds increase during the day. As this weather system approaches in the afternoon, instability is possible (the weather kind, not the political kind – that’s already very unstable thanks to disinformation). We could see a few thunderstorms. Maybe. We will see rain after 8pm, first west of Cascade Locks and near Arlington, then spreading all through the Gorge overnight. Saturday’s wind: 10-15mph early between Viento and Hood River with less than 10mph everywhere else. By late morning: 15-20mph between Stevenson and Mosier. Ahead of the incoming rain late afternoon or early evening, the wind is likely to spike rapidly. Be prepared for this if you’re on the river. High temps: 68/70/75/77 under increasingly cloudy sky that’s increasingly conducive to gardening, weeding, and rescuing tomatoes before the rain!
Sunday starts rainy all the way east to almost-Idaho, which means it’ll be raining in “Greater Idaho” for sure. It’ll also be raining in “Cascadia”. Rain continues through midday and then tapers off west of Arlington. Way out east in the desert, pouring rain continues into late afternoon or early evening. Morning temps: 45-57. Afternoon: 62-68. The Viento area is likely to be very windy early in the morning. Elsewhere: 10-15mph west of The Dalles and 25mph east of The Dalles. Afternoon wind: 20mph + rainbows west of The Dalles and 25-30mph (no rainbows) east of The Dalles.
Dry weather returns on Monday. Morning: cloudy to the west and sunny to the east. Afternoon: sunny everywhere with highs of 72-75. Wind will be around 10-15mph west of The Dalles and lighter to the east. WHO’S GOING FISHING?!?!?! YOU ARE!!!
Weather models call for warming weather for the rest of next week. They’re not quite sure what will happen on Tuesday – maybe some lingering westerlies, maybe not. We care because fishing. East wind is forecast Wednesday through Friday under sunny sky. This means it’ll be windy (20mph?) west of Hood River and calm or under 10mph east of Hood River. Once again, you’re going fishing if that’s your thing! Starting next weekend, uncertainty rises. So we’ll leave it here for now.
