Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!
SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast
Hi friends! Welcome to hump day in the Gorge! Breezy weather is in the cards today followed by a windier day tomorrow. Westerlies back off on Friday, but should be enough for foil sports (aren’t we all so glad there are awesome light-wind sports to do?). Thanks to a cold front, Saturday looks much windier, although it’s likely to be gusty. Model uncertainty kicks in on Sunday, but the overall setup looks good. Beyond that, uncertainty rises, but a warming trend is likely to shut down the wind on Monday and Tuesday, which should give all of us time to Get Shit Done! Before I forget: Doug’s Beach will be closed from Thursday, 7/30, to Wednesday 8/5 for the railroad folks to do whatever railroad folks do.
Wednesday started off with marine clouds on the west side, sun to the east, and pressures of 30.04/29.98/29.98 – 0.06/0.00. This indicates you’ll want to stay west of The Dalles today. Early wind was 16-19mph at the Hatch and will quickly fill in from Viento to Hood River. By midday, we’ll have 16-19mph from Stevenson to Hood River with 13-16mph at Mosier. Models suggest a midday lull at 13-16mph between Stevenson and Mosier before the westerlies build back up to 17-20mph from Stevenson to Mosier late afternoon. The Lyle to Rufus stretch eventually joins at 17-20mph after 5pm. River flow over the last 24 hours was 105-187kcfs, river temp is 71.2F (poor salmon), and high temp forecast is 82F for Hood River.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast
Models suggest slightly stronger wind on Thursday. Early westerlies will be 17-20mph from Stevenson to Arlington despite the presence of some low clouds in Stevenson. Areas east of The Dalles quickly fall off, and we’re left with 21-24mph from Stevenson to Mosier with 17-20mph near Rowena. Afternoon: 22-25mph from Stevenson to Doug’s with 17-20mph from Rufus to Arlington. Areas east of The Dalles (Avery to Arlington) eventually rise to 20-23mph in the evening. High temps: 80 in Hood River and upper 80s in the desert.
Hotter, sunnier weather is forecast on Friday, and that leads to lesser wind. We should still have 17-20mph from Viento to the Hatch right off the bat with 17-20mph from Stevenson to Mosier for a few hours in the morning. The wind falls to 13-16mph late morning thanks to building heat in the metro areas. Afternoon wind returns at 17-20mph from Stevenson to Doug’s (closed Doug’s, but it’s still there). High temp: 87 in Hood River.
On Saturday, a cold front approaches in the morning and pushes inland in the afternoon and evening. This reinforces cooling on the west side and allows a solid cross-Cascade temp gradient to develop. In addition, offshore high pressure will be strengthening. The timing doesn’t look perfect, but the setup is decent. Generally speaking, we’ll see a period of strong wind west of The Dalles in the morning. Clouds then push inland, and the strong wind shifts to areas between Rowena and Arlington. For now, let’s call the speed 28-33mph and refine it as we get closer.
The GFS calls for very little wind on Sunday, but that model tends to underestimate this particular setup. Looking at the Euro ensembles, we see all sorts of possibilities offered up. For now, I’ll toss out 20mph from Stevenson to Doug’s (still closed, but still a good location marker) and refine that forecast as Sunday moves closer. Models are pretty darn sure the wind will shut down next Monday and Tuesday in response to hotter weather across the region. Beyond that: warm and uncertain. So, I’ll leave you there for today. Good morning, neighbors! Mostly sunny, warm, somewhat breezy weather is in the cards through Friday. Saturday brings cooling temps, a little rain for areas west of Wyeth, and strong wind. Cool weather – less than 85 for everyone! – sticks around for Sunday before we drift into some sort of warming trend next week.
Glenwood and our friends around the world
Looking around the Gorge early on Wednesday it was a cool start: 45-55 degrees, mostly, with rockstar Glenwood (actually, “Country Music Star Glenwood”) at 40 degrees thanks to 850mb temps at 10C. That 850mb reading will really become important on Sunday morning when Glenwood will be downright cold! Elsewhere in the world right now, at least in places threatened by the USA government, it’s pretty warm and pretty darn muggy. This is why these places have been threatened – the president doesn’t like mugginess because it’s moist, too close to tears, and makes him feel weak. Tears, however, are a sign of your strength – you’re courageous enough to touch into those emotions. Cry, baby, cry! Do it!

Today in the Gorge is shaping up to be quite nice – warm, not-muggy, and slightly breezy west of The Dalles. Temps max out near 80 in Stevenson, 82 in Hood River, 88 in The Dalles, and 90 in Pasco. West wind builds to 15-20mph this morning from Stevenson to Hood River, dips to 15mph midday, and rises to 15-20mph from Stevenson to Mosier this afternoon with 10-15mph near Rowena and lighter wind to the east. Nice day for a dip in a river!
Thursday’s Gorge weather forecast
Thursday starts partly cloudy west of Wyeth and sunny to the east. Temps will be 50-60 degrees in the morning with west wind at 15-20mph all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. High clouds move through in the afternoon from west to east. Temps build to 79 in Stevenson, 80 in Hood River, 86 in The Dalles, and 92 in Pasco. Afternoon wind rises to 25mph from Stevenson to The Dalles with 20-25mph east of The Dalles to Arlington by evening.
Extended Gorge weather forecast
Friday: sunny, 85-95 degrees, west wind at 15-20mph west of Mosier in the morning and west of Avery in the afternoon.
More interesting weather is forecast Saturday. A cold front (colder weather!) pushes in from the west. This gives us cooler temps, 73-90, stronger wind (25-35mph), and an actual chance of actual rain west of Wyeth in the afternoon. Sunday will be 75-82 degrees (COOL!), breezy, and pretty much perfect as far as TATAS is concerned. In a very exciting twist, 850mb (5000′) temps may dip as low as 5-6C on Sunday morning. Combine that with the possibility of clear sky and light wind away from the Nch’i Wana, and some areas are going to dip below 40 degrees. Glenwood could fall to 32-36 degrees if the sky is clear enough and the wind light enough. SO EXCITING! Safe travels. -TATAS
