Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! My what a day we have coming up. Heck, we have at least five days of west wind on tap, and several of them look quite windy. Models have today pegged as the windiest. Strongest wind will focus east of Hood River for much of this five-day period, but there should be enough wind around town too to get you on the water, especially this morning. High temps for the next five days will be in the 65-70 range.
Okay. Enough buildup! Thursday starts with pressures of 30.05/29.90/29.83 for gradients of 0.15 and 0.07, which essentially means you can go anywhere you want to find some wind. TLDR: stay west in the morning, but be quick about it. Then go east of The Dalles this afternoon for the strongest, steadiest conditions. Other advice: never leave wind to find wind. General setup: strong offshore high pressure; inland trough; approaching cold front. That last feature is likely to disrupt the wind between Swell and Hood River at some point this afternoon. Also: as the front pushes in this afternoon, low clouds could fill in as far east as The Dalles. Want the Corridor? Get it this morning. Early wind wind was generally in the 16-19 range everywhere except Viento/Event Site (mid 20s) and Stevenson (cloudy and 10-13). By mid-morning, we’ll see the wind build to 27-31 from Viento to Mosier with 24-27 from Lyle to Arlington. Swell holds for a bit, and areas east to Arlington build to 30-33+ by 2pm. This strong wind then spreads east all the way to Boardman and holds through sunset. Sometime early to mid afternoon, models suggest that areas from Stevenson to Hood River will drop to gusty 21-24 and eventually fall to gusty 17-20 in the executive session. River flow over the last 24 hours was 215-253kcfs, river temp is 57.56F, and high temp forecast is 70F for Hood river and 76F for Arlington. If you’re going out east, don’t forget to stop at Amayah’s for dinner! The cool kids call ahead because it can take 20-25 minutes.
The aforementioned cold front sweeps through the area overnight and leaves us post-frontal Friday morning. Dawn Patrol wind will be partly cloudy, chilly 14-17 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 25-28 from Avery to Boardman. By early afternoon, the wind builds to 26-29, maybe 28-32, from Mosier to Arlington. Western Gorge: 14-17 and partly cloudy. High temp: 65F for Hood River. 66F for Arlington.
On Saturday, another front approaches in the offshore waters. This gives us morning 21-24 in the Corridor (Swell to Hood River and Mosier) followed by 28-32 from Mosier to Arlington, possibly Threemile. High temp: 65F. Sunday: if nothing changes, we’ll have gusty 17-20 in the Corridor and 27-31 out east. Monday: 21-24, subject to change. Have fun out there, and be safe. Keep an eye on your buddies.

After today (Thursday), cooler weather is forecast. Cool enough to snap the snow nice and hard overnight and set up spring skiing. Today will be another quick warmup with the freezing level at 12k and wind NW 20. Friday will be clear. Freezing level 2000′ early and 7000′ in the afternoon. Wind: NW 35-40 early (could affect lifts) and NW 20 in the afternoon. Saturday: high overcast early then clear. 6500′ freezing level in the morning, 4000′ In the afternoon. Wind NW 15-25. Sunday: Clear with low clouds increasing in the afternoon below 6000′. Freezing level 2500′ early and 4000′ later. Wind NW 25-30. Definitely some good corn snow in the picture!

There’s a work party for the new hike/horse/run trail in Post. Meet 5/25 at 9am at Family Man Staging Area. There’s a plant sale at Rockford Grange on 5/19. The Cascadia Dirt Cup is in Post Canyon June 1-2. There’s a weekly social for Wind Johnnies (The Gorge Wind Social) at Ferment Brewing every 3rd Monday this summer. The first is Monday, May 20th at 5:30pm.
The Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club offers free roll sessions (gear provided) for kids at the Hood River Pool every other Tuesday from 5:30 to 7pm. Visit their website for more deets: https://www.columbiagorgejuniorkayakclub.org/. Amayah’s offers a free meal every First Thursday from 1pm to 4pm. Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club is done for the season. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.
Cycling
Post, Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, Syncline, Columbia Hills, and Nestor are open. Cows are out on Hospital Hill. NO DOGS. That means you, all of you, even your dog that’s [insert adjective]. No dogs. Do not risk access for everyone. No parking at the corral. Whoopdee flowers are in full bloom. Hospital Hill and Syncline have ticks, oaks, and flowers. Columbia Hills is full of flowers and open to your bike. Definitely got a Tack Alert going on out there right now – lots of good dirt. It’s trail-building season.
