Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Models have good agreement through Thursday – west wind every day. While there’s lesser agreement about the weekend (we’ll talk more in a bit), the pattern looks generally westerly through the beginning of next week Not just westerly. Between now and Thrusday, we’re expecting the kind of westerly that tends to be on the steadier side.

Tuesday starts with pressures of 30.16/30.09/30.06 for gradients of 0.07 and 0.03. With partly cloudy sky in the metro area and clear sky in the Gorge, the east will get a slight jump in heating over the west. West wind builds to 16-19 from Stevenson to Mosier late morning. Afternoon wind is probably going to drop to 14-17 from Viento to Hood River and rise to 20-23 at Stevenson and from Mosier to Doug’s. Avery may join for the executive session, but locations farther east will have minimal wind today. River flow over the last 24 hours was 152-171kcfs, river temp is 55.22F, and high temp forecast is 77F.

Wednesday’s setup will be very similar to today: strong offshore high pressure, NW flow, heat in the desert, quick clearing in the metro area. We start with 11-14 form Viento to Swell. The wind slowly builds to 19-22 from Stevenson to The Dalles and holds through sunset. High temp: 80F.

An approaching trough on Thursday pushes reinforcing cool air into the west side. As of this morning, the timing for this is mid-morning on Thursday. While the activity in the upper atmosphere can cause gusty conditions and unreliable wind at the Hatch, it’s likely we’ll see a burst of strong to very strong wind following a mid-teens start. Expect a few hours of 27-30 from Viento to Hood River mid-morning before the focus of the strongest, steadiest wind shifts eastward. As of this morning, the deterministic GFS gives us 30-33+ from Mosier to Threemile in the afternoon. The ensembles are slightly less optimistic, but still give us averages in the upper 20’s to low 30s.

Extended: model agreement starts to break down on Friday. About 20% call for sunnier, warmer, more ridge-y weather. The rest have a more active pattern. The differences are more about wind strength, steadiness, and location than about wind/no wind. So far, it’s looking decent for the Victoria Day holiday weekend. Have fun on the river!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! It’s another windy day in the Gorge. As we ramp up the season, let’s have a quick safety talk. Starboard tack (heading towards Oregon) has the right of way. For safety reasons, don’t cross directly downwind of a not-on-foil SUP foiler (that means within about 30 feet) – their acceleration is very fast and occasionally caused by a wave and thus not quite in their control. Make a quick course change and go upwind of them. If you’re SUP foiling, wear a bright helmet and jersey so folks can see you. Smile at the people playing in the river around you. We’re all having fun! Okay, the wind forecast: lots of it coming up!

Monday kicks off with something close enough to “classic Gorge setup” to call it good. We have high pressure offshore and a trough hanging over the interior leading to clouds in the west and sun out east. Early pressures (well, not that early – I didn’t get up until 7) were 30.08/29.95/29.92 for gradients of 0.13 (!!) and 0.03. Expect 19-22 right off the bat from Viento to Mosier with 13-16 east to Arlington. By late morning, we’ll have 25-28 from Viento to Mosier with the Lyle-Doug’s stretch joining soon after and Stevenson lagging just a little longer. Wait ’til afternoon for iWind/iKite readings of 26-29 from Lyle to Arlington. If clouds burn off quicker than expected in the metro area, we’ll have the typical early afternoon lull at the Hatch. Models bring the wind back for the Executive session. River flow over the last 24 hours was 152-179kcfs, river temp is 54.86F, and high temp forecast is 70 for Hood River and 82 for the desert.

Despite less marine influence and more widespread sunshine, Tuesday still brings wind. Expect 18-22 Dawn Patrol from Viento to Swell. Models suggest the wind will drop to 15-18 mid morning (thanks to heating on the west side) and fill in from Stevenson to Swell, maybe to Hood River too. As the desert warms up like buns in the oven, the wind builds to 20-23 from Stevenson to Doug’s late afternoon through sunset. Wednesday looks even warmer with a touch less wind, maybe 11-14 to start and 16-19 to finish with Stevenson to Hood River the main focus.

Extended: Thursday starts quite light, perhaps 10-13. Don’t worry. An approaching trough cools the west side (Jones beach looks like 25-28, btw), and the desert pushes 90. This sets us up for mid-20’s in the late afternoon or evening, probably best near Rowena and Doug’s. Models agreement falls apart on Friday, but there’s a general picture off cooling in the west and heat out east. Ensembles have it pegged as the strongest day of the week. For now, let’s hold that one lightly and also make plans to jump on it. Weekend? Lots of variety in the models, so I’m going to wait for more clarity before making even a general call. Have fun and be safe out there today!
