Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Seasonably unsettled weather continues through the next several days as a series of weak but wind-influential systems swing through the Northwest. The most noticeable impact of this will be to shift the focus of the strongest wind from the Hood River area out to the Rowena stretch of the river. Thankfully, the range of “good” wind has widened with the rise of foil sports, so there will be plenty of room for y’all to spread out. Before we dive in… welcome to all the Canadians down for the Victoria Day holiday!

Saturday started off with pressures of 30.14/30.05/30.03 for gradients of 0.09 and 0.02. That’s enough for 15-18 dawn patrol from Viento to Swell. We’ll see the wind pick up to 17-20 from Stevenson to Mosier mid-morning with 11-14 from Lyle to Arlington. 20-23 at Swell is possible for a couple hours. The wind shifts to the east in the afternoon. Stevenson to Swell should be up-and-down 16-19 for the remainder of the day. Early afternoon sees 24-27 from Mosier to Rufus followed by 28-32 from Lyle to Arlington. If I had to guess – and apparently I’m supposed to! – I’d guess that the Rufus stretch will be less than perfect direction but good enough. But… never leave wind to find wind – stay by Rowena for best results! River flow over the last 24 hours was 200-232kcfs at The Dalles and 215-248 at John Day. River temp is 58.10F. High temp forecast is 62F for Hood River and 67F for Arlington.

Sunday sees yet another weak system impact the Gorge. The day starts with 14-17 all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. After a slow but steady start, the wind rises to 21-24 early afternoon from Mosier to Rufus with 15-18 at Arlington. After 2pm, models give a little rebound to the Corridor: expect 18-22 from Stevenson to Mosier with 23-26 from Lyle to Rufus and 20-23 at Arlington. Farther east: 17-20 at best. High temp forecast for Hood River is 63F.

Extended: Monday’s another day where the focus shifts east of Hood River. We may see 21-24 at the Hatch in the morning before a shift eastward and build to 25-28 from Mosier to Avery. Tuesday: 25-28 out east, maybe. Lots of disagreement on that particular day. Models are more certain about a strong wind day next Wednesday, but that’s a long ways out to be certain. We’ll keep watching it! Have fun out there today!

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Unseasonably cool weather continues for the next few days. Saturday is Meadows’ last day of the season. The freezing level will be 2500′ early and 4000′ later. Max temps near 40. Wind will be NW 20-25. Light snow is possible overnight… just a trace. Sunday will be sunny. Freezing level 5000′ rising to 6500′. Max temps near 40. Wind NNW 10 becoming NW 20-25. get to the mountain early enough either day, and you’ll find a solid snap to the snow thanks to excellent overnight radiational cooling.

Cascadia Cup mountain bike race in Post Canyon 5/18 and 5/19. There’s a work party for the new hike/horse/run trail in Post. Meet 5/25 at 9am at Family Man Staging Area. There’s a plant sale and garden fair with music and vendors at Rockford Grange on 5/19 starting at 2pm. The Cascadia Dirt Cup is in Post Canyon June 1-2. There’s a weekly social for Wind Johnnies (The Gorge Wind Social) at Ferment Brewing every 3rd Monday this summer. The first is Monday, May 20th at 5:30pm.

The Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club offers free roll sessions (gear provided) for kids at the Hood River Pool every other Tuesday from 5:30 to 7pm. Visit their website for more deets: https://www.columbiagorgejuniorkayakclub.org/. Amayah’s offers a free meal every First Thursday from 1pm to 4pm. Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club is done for the season. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.  

Cycling

Cascadia Dirt Cup is May 18/19 in Post. Avoid. Post, Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, Syncline, Columbia Hills, and Nestor are open. Cows are out on Hospital Hill. NO DOGS. That means you, all of you, even your dog that’s [insert adjective]. No dogs. Do not risk access for everyone. No parking at the corral. Whoopdee flowers are in full bloom. Hospital Hill and Syncline have ticks, oaks, and flowers. Columbia Hills is full of flowers and open to your bike. Definitely got a Tack Alert going on out there right now – lots of good dirt. It’s trail-building season. Get on the HRATS mailing list if you’d like to help out.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Another windy day is on tap. As a matter of fact, the westerlies don’t show any sign of stopping in the next 10 days or so. For the next three or four days, we’ll have weak weather systems moving through. While you won’t notice much impact in the sky cover, you will see impacts on the wind. Namely, Swell will be less-than-ideal, and conditions elsewhere (notably the Rufus stretch) could be extra up-and-down. Best spots in these setups tend to be Stevenson, Viento, Mosier, the Rowena stretch, Avery, and Arlington. That doesn’t mean you won’t find good wind near Rufus; it just might not be all day long.

Let’s look at today. We’re starting with a few marine clouds in Hood River. Pressures at 6am were 30.14/29.96/29.95. I looked those up myself, and that’s what I got, but it doesn’t feel right to me, honestly. Whether it is or isn’t… Models shift the strongest gradients east pretty quickly today. Dawn Patrol best bet is Mosier to Doug’s with 25-30. Eastern Gorge starts with 25ish between Avery and Arlington. Mid-morning wind will be 27-30 from Mosier to Arlington with 14-17 or perhaps 17-20 at Stevenson and Swell and 22-25 at Viento and Hood River. Things settle in early afternoon as the desert heat outpaces the Corridor by 10 degrees: 29-33 from Lyle to Arlington with 18-21 from Stevenson to Swell. Mosier will be questionable to this afternoon. Could fall in the windy zone. Could drop off. River flow is worth noting: John Day maxed out at 219-283kcfs over the last 24 hours. The Dalles: 197-308. River temp is 58.10F. High temp Hood River: 64F. Arlington: 72F.

Saturday sees a weak weather system push inland midday. That will affect your choices. The day starts with 11-14 from Viento to Swell, 5-10 at Stevenson, and light wind to the east of Swell. Mid to late morning, we’ll see the wind rise to 22-25 from Stevenson to Mosier with 15-18 from Lyle to Doug’s and 10-13 to the east. Afternoon: 27-31 from Mosier to Rufus with 22-25 at Arlington and 14-17 from Stevenson to Hood River. Models suggest the wind could rise to the 30-35 zone from Lyle to Threemile in the afternoon. With this shortwave moving through, the wind will be intermittently good/not good along the Rufus stretch of the river. High temp: 64F for Hood River and 72F for Arlington.

Extended (when things get unclear): Sunday’s forecast contains wind, at least in the low 20’s, but potentially stronger. Tuesday looks a bit stronger, but there are other model complications. Those same complicated models are hinting at a bigger day next Wednesday, but that’s really far out to be predicting! Let’s leave it there for now. Have a fun day on the river. Be safe!

Sunshine Friday. Freezing level 2500′ early and 6500′ later. Max temps 40ish. Wind: NW 40 early (could affect lift ops) and NW 20-30 in the afternoon (could affect the highest lifts). Saturday: sunny with a few clouds in the afternoon. Freezing level 6000′ early falling to 4000′ in the afternoon and 2500′ overnight. Max temps upper 30s. Wind: NW 15-20 in the morning and W 25 in the afternoon. Sunday: sunny. Freezing level 2500′ early and 4000′ later. Max temps 40ish. Wind: NW 25-35 early and NW 20-25 later. This relatively cool weather will make for excellent corn snow conditions following a frozen granular start. Get some!
