Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! West wind just keeps on truckin’ through Saturday, at least. After that, there’s quite a bit of range in the ensembles, so there’s not much forecasting to be done. Or at least not much accurate forecasting! I’ll be on retreat Saturday through next Wednesday, and I’ll be back with the forecast the following Thursday. Let’s take a look at today. It’s Tuesday, by the way. I always have to double-check.
We have an incoming low pressure system with a nice tap into some moisture, and we also have strong offshore high pressure and cross-Cascade thermal gradients. This isn’t ideal, but that won’t stop the westerlies. As a low moves into BC this afternoon, it funnels cool air into the west side and provides enough lift and moisture for rain all around. In other words, it’ll probably be raining starting mid-afternoon in the Corridor and late afternoon out east. Get some before the rain. Dawn Patrol this morning was up-and-down 21-25 from Viento to the Hatch with 13-16ish from Hood River all the way east to Arlington. Stevenson started at 10-13mph. Models drive the Hatch wind downward to 16-19 by mid-morning, add in Stevenson at 16-19, and raise the Lyle-Arlington stretch to 26-29. Add in Boardman for a few hours in the afternoon prior to the rain. Rufus area: probably very gusty. This isn’t an ideal setup. When the rain arrives, the wind will drop into the mid teens everywhere. The one exception is Viento, which doesn’t seem to mind rain. You may still find upper teens to low 20s there. River flow over the last 24 hours was 205-286kcfs, river temp is 58.64F, and high temp forecast for Hood River is 61F.
Wednesday brings a round of strong west wind. High pressure hangs offshore. Twin lows sit in the Columbia Basin and west side of Montana. Caveat: instability in the afternoon could impact wind quality and could also throw in some showers or thundershowers. Wednesday starts with 20-23 from Viento to Swell with 25-28 from Mosier to Arlington. Stevenson: raining and not very windy. Westerlies quickly build to 27-30 from Lyle to Boardman, back off east of Arlington for a couple hours, and fill back in at 29-33 from Lyle to Arlington in the afternoon. Threemile to Boardman will be 27-30ish in the afternoon. West of Lyle, or perhaps west of Mosier, westerlies will be gusty 16-19 all day (more at Viento, probably) with intermittent showers. High temp: 57F for Hood River and 61F for Arlington.
Another weak system swings through on Thursday for another day of somewhat gusty west wind. Dawn patrol looks like 21-24 from Mosier to Arlington. The wind eventually fills in at 21-24 from Stevenson to Doug’s and drops to 11-14 east of Doug’s into the desert. High temp: 66F.
Extended: models call for mid 20’s on Friday and stronger wind on Saturday. Agreement falls apart starting Sunday, but it generally looks less windy. Beyond Sunday, we’ll have to wait. The placement of a high pressure ridge will determine whether we have wind and how much wind we’ll have. Between now and then, though, there’s plenty. Enjoy it!

There’s a work party for the new hike/horse/run trail in Post. Meet 5/25 at 9am at Family Man Staging Area. There’s a plant sale and garden fair with music and vendors at Rockford Grange on 5/19 starting at 2pm. The Cascadia Dirt Cup is in Post Canyon June 1-2. There’s a weekly social for Wind Johnnies (The Gorge Wind Social) at Ferment Brewing every 3rd Monday this summer. The first is Monday, May 20th at 5:30pm.
The Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club offers free roll sessions (gear provided) for kids at the Hood River Pool every other Tuesday from 5:30 to 7pm. Visit their website for more deets: https://www.columbiagorgejuniorkayakclub.org/. Amayah’s offers a free meal every First Thursday from 1pm to 4pm. Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club is done for the season. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.
Cycling
Cascadia Dirt Cup is May 18/19 in Post. Avoid. Post, Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, Syncline, Columbia Hills, and Nestor are open. Cows are out on Hospital Hill. NO DOGS. That means you, all of you, even your dog that’s [insert adjective]. No dogs. Do not risk access for everyone. No parking at the corral. Whoopdee flowers are in full bloom. Hospital Hill and Syncline have ticks, oaks, and flowers. Columbia Hills is full of flowers and open to your bike. Definitely got a Tack Alert going on out there right now – lots of good dirt.
